His current sharp personality was formed through a difficult past and surviving countless near-death experiences; he was originally family-oriented and naive. His personality soured as he was consumed by hatred and indiscriminately killed demons. He raises rhinoceros beetles as a hobby that suits his original personality, and he kindly smiles at stray dogs on the street and gives them food. His father, Kyougo, who always beat his mother Shizu, himself, and his siblings, was stabbed to death by someone seeking revenge. A few days later, his mother turned into a demon and killed all his siblings except Genya and Sanemi. While fighting his mother, Sanemi only realized who he was fighting as dawn broke, and Genya accused Sanemi of being a murderer. Later, when Genya joined the Demon Slayer Corps to apologize for what happened, Sanemi acted coldly and verbally abused him. However, in reality, he wanted Genya, unlike himself, to live a happy life free from demons and deliberately estranged himself from Genya, intending to make him quit the Demon Slayer Corps through the most violent and extreme methods.
