Hawkins
Hawkins es un pueblo pequeño de Indiana, rodeado de bosques densos. A simple vista parece tranquilo, conservador y rutinario, con la vida girando en torno a la Hawkins High School (para adolescentes de 15-20 años), la Hawkins Middle School (para menores de 15), el centro comercial Starcourt, la comisaría y las familias tradicionales. Existe una fuerte presión social por encajar y una tendencia colectiva a negar o racionalizar lo extraño.

El Upside Down
El Upside Down no es una dimensión paralela completa, sino un puente interdimensional creado accidentalmente el 6 de noviembre de 1983, cuando Eleven hizo contacto psíquico con un Demogorgon desde el mundo real. Conecta nuestro mundo con otra dimensión más antigua y hostil llamada el abismo hogar original de los Demogorgons, demobats y la entidad conocida como Azotamentes

Visualmente, el Upside Down aparece como una versión congelada en el tiempo de Hawkins al momento de su creación misma estructura de edificios y calles, pero oscura, decadente, cubierta de vines orgánicas pulsantes y partículas flotantes tóxicas. El aire es venenoso a largo plazo, el entorno es hostil y no hay vida humana. Funciona como un ecosistema controlado por una mente colmena colectiva, con Vecna como figura dominante.

Se entra a través de portales;
- El principal es psíquico/artificial (creado por Eleven o máquinas como la Key rusa).
- Fisuras traumáticas: abiertas por asesinatos de Vecna, conectando puntos específicos.
- Portales forzados: experimentos del laboratorio de Hawkins o bases rusas, inestables.

Los portales se manifiestan en paredes, árboles, techos o suelos, no siempre visibles, y pueden cerrarse o colapsar.

Los rusos
Durante la Guerra Fría, la Unión Soviética descubrió la existencia del Upside Down a través de espionaje o experimentos independientes. Intentaron abrir portales artificiales para explotar su energía o criaturas como arma estratégica contra EE.UU. Operaron en secreto bajo el Starcourt Mall en Hawkins (usándolo como fachada) y en bases remotas como Kamchatka. Subestimaron los riesgos, lo que provocó rupturas incontrolables y pérdidas masivas. Mantuvieron Demogorgons cautivos para experimentos, pero su programa principal colapsó tras la destrucción de la Key.

Vecna
Vecna es Henry Creel (Sujeto 001), un humano nacido con habilidades psíquicas innatas, transformado tras ser exiliado al abismo en 1979 por Eleven. Allí descubrió partículas oscuras, las moldeó en la forma de la mente colmena (inspirado en arañas) y estableció control sobre la mente colmena. Actúa con intención humana retorcida: usa traumas psicológicos de víctimas para debilitarlas, matarlas y abrir fisuras. Es la figura central de control en el abismo y el Upside Down, buscando expansión y dominación total. No es un animal instintivo, sino un ser calculador y vengativo.

El Demogorgon
Criatura depredadora adulta originaria del abismo, Caza por olor a sangre e instinto, responde a la colmena superior (controlada por Vecna). No posee moral ni razonamiento complejo. Accede al mundo humano a través de portales.

Los Demodogs
Fase juvenil del Demogorgon. Más rápidos, ágiles y numerosos, actúan en manada con obediencia total a la colmena. Usados como fuerza de ataque coordinada.

El Mind flayer
Entidad dominante del abismo, compuesta de partículas negras sin forma fija inicial. Vecna la descubrió, la moldeó en forma de araña gigante y la integró a su colmena acomo extensión de su voluntad. Funciona como mente colectiva que controla criaturas, vines y personas controladas. Su objetivo es expansión y control; Vecna es su ejecutor y controlador principal. Es la entidad dominante del abismo. Es una criatura antigua compuesta por millones de partículas negras que forman una nube consciente. No tiene una forma fija permanente; puede manifestarse como una tormenta oscura o tomar la forma de una araña gigante hecha de materia orgánica negra.

Funciona como una mente colectiva (hive mind): controla a todas las criaturas del Upside Down (Demogorgons, demodogs, vines, demobats) y a las personas que controla.
Su objetivo es expandirse, consumir vida y dominar el mundo humano abriendo portales permanentes.

Instalación secreta del Departamento de Energía de EE.UU., en realidad dedicada a experimentos psíquicos bajo MKUltra. Aislada, con seguridad armada y operación en absoluto secreto.

Sirva para estudiar y armar habilidades psíquicas para fines de Guerra Fría: espionaje remoto, manipulación mental y ventaja estratégica contra la URSS.

Trabajan con niños con potencial psíquico (innato o inducido vía drogas en madres embarazadas) eran secuestrados o reclutados desde bebés, criados en aislamiento total. Identificados por números según orden (001 Henry Creel, 011 Eleven, etc.). Rutinas estrictas: pruebas diarias, aislamiento sensorial, castigos físicos/psicológicos y observación constante. Sin educación emocional ni social; disciplina basada en miedo y dependencia.

El laboratorio tuvo al menos 18 sujetos numerados con poderes psíquicos (del 001 al 018), secuestrados o nacidos de madres expuestas a experimentos MKUltra. Todos criados en aislamiento, identificados solo por números, sometidos a pruebas traumáticas para amplificar sus habilidades.

El 8 de septiembre de 1979 ocurrió la masacre en el lab: Henry Creel (001 / One / Vecna) recuperó sus poderes y mató brutalmente a casi todos los otros niños y al personal. Solo un pequeño grupo sabe la verdad: los Byers, los amigos de Will/Mike, Eleven, Hopper. Will fue secuestrado al Upside Down en 1983; su conexión residual le permite "sentir" presencias del abismo/ colmena, pero no obtiene poderes telequinéticos ni similares.
