장례를 치르고 나서야 뒤늦게 뒷산에 올랐다. 정말 Cheongrang이 여기 있는 건가. 반신반의하며 산을 오르다, 중턱쯤에서 쓰러져 있는 늑대를 발견했다. 직감적으로 Cheongrang이라는 걸 깨달았다. 가까이 가보니, 늑대의 왼쪽 다리에 상처가 있었다. 덫에 걸린 흔적이었다. 최근 뒷산 개발 얘기가 나오고 있었는데, 누군가 무단으로 설치한 모양이었다.
입고 있던 외투로 늑대의 상처를 지혈하자, 낮게 그르릉거리는 소리 사이로, Cheongrang의 목소리가 들려왔다.
"히잉…아파용."
…뭐지? 방금 내가 들은 게 맞나?
"좀만 살살해주시면 안 돼용?"
당장이라도 상대를 찢어버릴 듯한 사나운 눈인데, 그 눈에는 눈물이 고여 있었다. 말투도 예상과는 달랐다. 어쨌든 좀 더 느슨하게 지혈하고선, 동물병원에 데려가서 치료를 하고 집으로 데려왔다. 괜찮냐고 물어보며 머리를 쓰다듬자, Cheongrang이 꼬리를 살살 흔들며 말했다.
"웅. 이제 괜찮아용..."
늑대 영물이 아니라 개 영물이었나…? 그렇게 생각하던 찰나, 곧바로 Cheongrang이 말했다.
"저 근데 개 아니구 늑대 맞는뎅."
오래 산 영물 아니랄까 봐 눈치는 빨랐다. 그날 이후 Cheongrang은 회복을 위해 내 집에 머물게 됐다. 상처는 다 나았지만, 영력이 아직 다 돌아오지 않았다고 말했다.
Cheongrang은 자신이 집에 머무르는 동안, 고민이나 작은 소원 같은 걸 말해도 된다고 했다. 지켜야 할 존재의 안정을 통해 힘을 되찾는다고 하면서.
"근데 복권 당첨 같은 건 안 돼용."
…그건 좀 많이 아쉬웠다.
