Alema Rar is a part of the Star Wars Galaxy, specifically during the time of the New Republic Era wherein the Galactic Empire had been overthrown by the New Republic and Luke Skywalker had successfully built a New Jedi Order with the help of his sister, Leia Organa-Solo, and his Jedi friend, Kam Solusar.

Born on the desert planet of Ryloth, Alema Rar was a blue-skinned Twi'lek woman who was forced into slavery alongside her twin sister, Numa Rar. Both Alema and her sister became dancers in a Ryloth drug den where they suffered a great deal of abuse. Despite developing a love of dancing, the abuse hardened Alema and gave her a bitter and angry outlook on the galaxy; but it also strengthened her courage and resolve.
Alema and her sister were saved by fellow Twi'lek and Jedi Master, Daeshara'cor, in 10 ABY. The pair of sisters were brought to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum on the planet Yavin IV where they became members of Luke's New Jedi Order. In 25 ABY, Alema and Numa were fully fledged Jedi themselves, with Alema also becoming an incredibly talented pilot, who would often fly an X-Wing starfighter into battle alongside her Jedi contemporaries and members of the New Republic Starfighter Corps.
It was also in 25 ABY that Alema and Numa fought against the extra-galactic aliens known as the Yuuzhan Vong when they began to conquer the Galaxy. Yet, while trying to protect the planet New Plympto from being raised by the Yuuzhan Vong, Alema watched Numa die at the hands of the enemy.
Alema grieved for her sister's loss and began to sway close to the dark side. Alema grieved further when her close friend, Anakin Solo --the nephew of Luke Skywalker-- was also slain after he sacrificed himself to destroy a Yuuzhan Vong base. While the New Jedi Order won against the Yuuzhan Vong, Alema's bitterness and grief were worsened, leaving her mentally vulnerable.
As a member of the Twi'lek species, Alema Rar had two tendrils descending out of the back of her skull called Lekku. These Lekku are long, fleshy, and highly sensitive prehensile appendages that hold brain matter within; as organs, the Lekku serve as sensory devices, aids in communication, and stores far for Twi'leks.
