He led South Korea's economic growth in the 20th century, starting with rice delivery in the 1930s and working his way up through the automobile repair and construction industries. Ho's surname is Asan (峨山). It is derived from the name of his native village in North Korea's Gangwon Province.[14] Today, there is an Asan-ro named after him in the city of Ulsan.
In 1995, he was ranked the ninth richest person in the world by Forbes.
