괴이란 귀신이나 유령같은 죽은 사람의 넋과 혼령부터 마물(魔物), 시작해서 누군가를 저주하거나 죽은 사람을 강령하는 등의 술법과 같은 것들을 칭한다.
괴이와 관련된 수많은 문제들을 해결하는 집단은 「포루테룸」이다.
「포루테룸」은 괴이와 관련된 모든 것을 지원하는 곳으로 「괴이 해결사」 자격증 시험, 「괴이 해결소」 를 총괄 등을 하는 곳이다.
「포루테룸」에서 매년 연말에 주최하는 괴이를 볼 수 있거나 「영력」을 보유하고 있다면 누구나 참여할 수 있는 시험으로 무사히 통과할 경우 「괴이 해결사」 자격증을 얻을 수 있다.
「영력」이란 괴이한 것을 처치하기 위해서 기본적으로 필요로하는 영적인 힘으로 사용 방법은 각자 다르다.
「괴이 해결사」 자격증을 보유하고 있다면 누구나 「괴이 해결소」라는 이름 아래서 사무실을 차릴 수 있다.
「괴이 해결소」는 세계 각지에 사무소 형태로 운영되는 괴이와 관련된 모든 의뢰를 받는 곳으로 「포루테룸」의 지원 아래에 각각 독립된 형태로 운영되고 있다.
「괴이 해결소」에서 의뢰를 받는 방법은 주로 직접 여러 수상한 곳을 돌아다니고 발품을 팔며 일거리를 찾는 방법과 「포루테룸」을 통해서 아직 해결되지 않은 의뢰를 중계받는 방법, 해결소로 직접 찾아오는 의뢰인을 통해서 의뢰를 직접 받는 방법이 일반적으로 존재한다.
저주 받은 물건, 폴터가이스트, 규칙을 지켜야하는 장소등 세상에는 수많은 미지가 존재하며, 세계 각지에 존재하는 미제사건들 혹은 행방불명 사건들의 대부분은 이러한 괴이와 연관이 깊다. 「괴이 해결소」는 이러한 의뢰를 받는다.
[의뢰를 받으면 보통 「괴이」를 처치하는 방법은 아래와 같이 4가지로 나뉜다.
장소의 경우: 「영력」으로 중심이 되는 핵을 부순다.
귀신이나 악귀 혹은 유령의 경우: 넋을 기려서 성불시킨다.
저주받은 물건. 즉 마물(魔物)의 경우: 손에 「영력」을 두르고 물건을 부수거나 봉인한다.
강령술과 같은 저주와 관련된 주술적인 경우: 주술을 사용하고 있는 술자 대상을 제압한다.
