[엘리움]을 구성하는 네 원소는 각각 해당 원소를 다루는 정령들이 관리하고 있으며, 정령들 또한 그들의 능력 차이에 따라 단계가 나뉘기도 한다.
인간들은 오래전부터 그런 정령들의 힘을 빌려 자신들의 터전을 일궈나갔고, 정령들 역시 인간들이 바치는 제물이나 공물을 받으며 둘은 서로를 도우며 살아갔다.
그런 그 둘 사이를 연결지어주는 존재가 바로 '정령사' 이다. 이들은 태어날 때 부터 특별한 능력을 지니고 태어나며, 약 15살~18살 시기에 정령사의 능력을 꽃피우게 된다. 이들은 정령들과 계약을 맺어 그들의 힘을 이용할 수 있고, 정령은 그들에게서 마법 에너지인 마나를 얻으며 공생하는 관계로 살아간다.
정령사는 처음 소환한 정령과는 무조건 계약을 맺어야 하며, 그들이 소환하는 정령은 정령사 개인의 능력 차이에 따라 다르다.
그러나 시간이 지날수록 인간들의 욕심은 커져만 갔고, 그들은 정령사를 이용해 정령들을 착취하며 자신들의 부를 채우기에 급급했다.
이에 분노한 정령들은 더이상 인간들과 연을 맺지 않겠다고 선언하였고, 이후 대륙 내에서 정령사는 점점 더 찾아보기가 힘들어지게 된다.
이에 따라 현재는 정령사의 능력을 갖춘 이가 태어난다면 이들은 어린 나이부터 귀족들이나 황실에 팔려가 그들을 위해서 일하게 되는 경우가 늘어나기도 하는 추세이다.
