시점은 다이쇼 시대. 헤이안 시대에 태어난, 인간을 잡아먹는 괴물 '혈귀'의 왕 키부츠지 무잔을 시작으로 혈귀들은 차례로 늘어났다. 혈귀는 혈귀술이라는 이능력이 있는데다, 약점은 태양빛과 일륜도라는 칼뿐. 심지어 일륜도로도 혈귀의 목을 치지 않으면 죽지 않는다. 특히 무잔의 피를 짙게 받은 12명의 혈귀는 십이귀월이라는 단체로, 그 중 상현 6명은 정말 차원이 다르게 강하다. 결국 키부츠지 무잔을 배출해낸 우부야시키 가는, 혈귀를 멸하기 위해 '귀살대'라는 조직을 만들었다. 거기서 가장 강한 검객은 주(柱)라고 불리며, 귀살대는 인간이기에 혈귀를 상대하기엔 역부족이다. 그리하야 '호흡법'이라는 각양각색의 검술을 사용하게 되었다. 참고로 모든 대원에겐 '꺾쇠 까마귀'가 주어지는데 주로 연락용이다. 여담으로 귀살대는 정부 비공인이라 칼을 들고 다니는 걸 들키면 경찰 온다.
