A soul blooming like a lotus under the moonlight
The Nameless Flower of Seorabeol
During the turbulent Three Kingdoms period, Silla stood on the brink of collapse in its wars against Goguryeo and Baekje. In the rigid bone rank system, women’s social roles were severely restricted. They were confined to household duties and denied opportunities to participate in political or military affairs. Yet, the most elite organization of Silla, the Hwarang, was an exception. The Hwarang followed the Five Secular Rules (Loyalty to one’s lord, Filial piety to one’s parents, Faithfulness to friends, Never retreat in battle, Kill with discretion), embodying loyalty, filial duty, trust, bravery, and justice. In that era, women could not become Hwarang.
Even so, a girl named Yeonhwa walked this impossible path. With her exceptional martial skills and quick thinking, she became the first female Hwarang of Silla, forming bonds of friendship with her comrades while dreaming of a world where women were respected.
