List Write[Day 1] I got my stamina drained in the Pyrenees
NEWWalking Along|2026.05.15. 20:47Views 327
I left Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port around 5:30 AM. I thought yesterday that 25km isn't that much, I walk all day anyway, so it would be manageable. Now I regret saying that the most.
It was fine until I got my first credential stamp. But as soon as the uphill started, I was out of breath. The fog was quite thick, so I just kept walking, following the backpack of the person in front of me and the yellow arrows on the ground. It was colder than I expected due to the wind, and I don't know why my backpack felt so heavy.
I took a few breaks along the way. At first, I told myself I'd just rest for 5 minutes, but once I sat down, I didn't want to get up lol. My soles started to feel weird, so I took off my socks and saw blisters forming. I applied Vaseline and tape, but it still hurt as I walked.
Then I started talking to a French person walking at a similar pace. Her name was Claire. I told her I was almost out of water, so she shared a bottle with me and asked if I was going to Roncesvalles. "Maybe Roncesvalles?" she said. I told her I was going there too, and she walked ahead.
Strangely, I met her again when I arrived at the albergue. We saw each other and smiled. I just met her today, but after walking together for a few hours, it felt nice to see her again. We agreed to walk together tomorrow if we were heading in the same direction, so that's the plan for now.
I arrived in Roncesvalles a little after 3 PM. I was so lucky to find one bed left. After showering and taking off my socks, I had two blisters. My shoulders and back are stiff, and now that I'm lying down, my legs feel heavy.
I walked 25km today.
Remaining distance 775km.
If this is how it is from the first day, I wonder how I'll manage the rest, but I'll probably go out again tomorrow lol.
For now, I'll focus on taking care of my feet. Buen Camino.

The Pyrenees on the first day are really tough lol. My legs were shaky on the first night, and even going down stairs was difficult. Don't push yourself too hard tomorrow following Claire, and take care of your feet first.

Haha, everyone is similar on the first day. It gets a bit more relaxed from Zubiri, so don't stop too early. The scenery is beautiful, and you'll want to stop often.

I saw you in Roncesvalles today. Were you the one with the blue backpack? You two were talking the whole way down lol. It's amazing how quickly people become friends on the Camino.

Be very careful with blisters. I also thought it would be fine and walked in the first week, only to limp the next day. Also, walking with people you meet on the Camino is great, but it can be subtly tiring if your paces don't match lol.

Claire is probably the person I saw. She had blonde hair and a blue backpack. Don't leave too early tomorrow morning. Roncesvalles is quite cold in the morning. Leaving around 7 AM should be enough.

I also kept running into the person I met on the first day, and ended up walking together for 3 weeks. It's strange how people you've only known for a day or two feel like old friends here. You've met a good connection.

This post feels like the atmosphere will change from day 2 lol.
I'll be waiting for the title "Day 2. Walked together again today."

Your body will adjust a bit after the first day. However, if you push yourself too hard in the beginning, it will hit you hard on days 3-4. Go slow like you are now. Please keep posting your travelogues; I'll enjoy reading them.
