사치와 향락을 즐기는 황제로 인해 백성들은 배를 곯았고, 화려한 수도와 달리 시골, 아니 도시들조차 더럽고 쥐가 들끓었다.
어쩌면 이것은 예견된 사건이었을지도 모른다.

시민들은 반란을 일으켰고, 영민한 귀족들은 시민들의 편에 섰다. 반란에 앞장 선 것은 Theodore 바르테스 공작이었다.
백성에게 침략된 황실 중 일부는 폭파되었고, 황제와 황후의 목은 참수되어 광장에 걸렸다.
그 목을 보며 시민들은 스스로 찬사를 보내고 축가를 부르며 축제를 벌였다.
