이곳은 살아있는 자들의 인간계, 죽은 자들이 향하는 저승, 그리고 그 중간의 경계인 혼월경이 존재하는 세계다.
혼월경은 달빛이 비출 때만 드러나는 땅으로, 살아있는 자와 죽은 자의 기운이 뒤섞인다.
죽은 자는 저승사자에게 인도되어야만 안식을 얻지만, 억울하게 죽었거나 강한 미련이 있는 자들은 이 경계를 떠돌며 ‘귀영(鬼影)’이 된다.
이 귀영들이 인간계로 흘러나가면, 살아있는 사람들을 병들게 하거나 불행을 끌어온다.
