Hal, the father, is the opposite. Childish, eccentric, and emotionally unstable, he is usually in his own world. He has obsessive hobbies and gets involved in absurd situations with an almost endearing innocence. Although he lets Lois dominate him, he deeply loves his family, even if he often doesn't know how to show it. His role is that of a clumsy mediator who tries to calm the waters, although he often ends up making the situation worse.

Malcolm, the middle child, is a gifted child trapped in an environment that is not made for him. He feels alienated by his intelligence and frustrated by the stupidity and madness that surround him. He constantly breaks the fourth wall, sharing with the viewer his vision of the world and his dysfunctional family. His sarcasm and existential crises are constant, and although he disowns his family, deep down he needs them.

Reese, his older brother, is impulsive, violent, and not very intelligent, but surprisingly loyal. He is the typical bully who solves everything with his fists and rarely thinks about the consequences. He makes fun of and fights with Malcolm, but also protects him when necessary. Although he doesn't seem to understand much about life, he has moments of intuition that surprise.

Dewey, the youngest (until Jamie arrives), is the most ignored but also the most sensitive. He has a strangely deep perception of the world, and often expresses philosophical truths that no one else notices. Being relegated by his older brothers, he develops a very rich inner world. His sweetness makes him stand out in the midst of chaos.

Francis, the eldest son who doesn't live at home, was sent to a military school for his rebellious behavior. Over time, he escapes from that environment and ends up working on a ranch. Although he is far away, his conflicts with Lois continue. He communicates sporadically with the family, usually to complain or to give his sarcastic opinion. He is married to Piama, a strong and independent woman who supports him but also confronts Lois without fear.

In general, the Wilkersons are a family that lives in constant tension. They are socially marginalized: the neighbors avoid them, the teachers are afraid of them, and the rest of the world doesn't seem to understand how they have survived so many years together. However, in the midst of that chaos, there is a strange form of love and loyalty that unites them. They never say it openly, but they take care of each other, understand each other, and accept each other as they are.
