Wendigo

The Wendigo originates from the legends of the Algonquian Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada. They are typically born when humans commit the taboo of cannibalism (eating human flesh) during times of famine or crisis. Those who break this taboo are possessed by an evil spirit, their hearts freeze, and they gradually transform into insatiable, bloodthirsty monsters.

Besides cannibalism, excessive greed or being bewitched by other Wendigos can also lead to this monstrous transformation.

In legend, the Wendigo is a nocturnal predator completely dominated by its desire to eat humans. They lack human reason, possessing only highly developed hunting instincts.

Core Habits and Behavioral Traits

Endless Consumption: Every person they eat causes their body to grow proportionally larger. This results in them never being able to fill their stomachs, perpetually suffering from extreme hunger and madness.

Nocturnal Hunting and Stealth: They are primarily active at night. During the day, they hide in dark, deep forests, underground caves, or abandoned mines.

Embodiment of Winter and Blizzards: Their activity varies with the seasons. Winter is their most active period, and they particularly enjoy hunting in harsh weather conditions with blizzards.

Cruel Hunting Techniques

Perfect Mimicry of Human Voices: They can perfectly imitate human cries for help, weeping, or the names of acquaintances. This is how they lure victims deep into the forest, causing them to get lost before striking.

Manipulation of Weather and Environment: Some legends state that Wendigos can summon blizzards or fog. They can make the forest pitch-black, completely cutting off escape routes for their victims.

Supernatural Senses and Speed: They possess excellent night vision and hearing. They can leap at high speeds between treetops, moving silently. Once they lock onto prey, it is difficult to escape.

Toying with and Torturing Prey: They do not always kill their prey immediately. They deliberately induce fear and hysteria in their victims (commonly known as "Wendigo fever"), enjoying the process of their prey going mad in despair.

Because Wendigos possess extremely strong physical regeneration abilities, wounds inflicted by ordinary swords or modern firearms heal rapidly. Specific methods must be used to destroy them completely.

1. Core Weakness: Fire and Melting the Heart

According to Wikipedia, the Wendigo's soul and power originate from a heart made entirely of ice. Fire Attack and Cremation (Most Traditional): Fire is the Wendigo's greatest nemesis. Their bodies must be completely burned to ashes by a large fire. In popular culture games (like "Until Dawn"), using a flamethrower or igniting gas to burn them to death is a classic trope.

Seizing the Ice Heart: Some legends mention that the strongest hunters must forcibly rip open the Wendigo's chest, extract the ice-like heart, and throw it directly into a raging fire to melt, thereby truly ending its life.

2. Dismemberment and Scattering Ashes

Wendigos possess strong resentment and supernatural abilities of resurrection. Dismemberment: After killing a Wendigo, if the body is not dismembered, its evil spirit will quickly repair the flesh and resurrect.

Scattering Ashes to the Winds: Hunters must use an axe to dismember it into multiple pieces, burn them completely to ashes, and then scatter the ashes in different winds, or bury its head deep in sacred land like a church graveyard, to prevent the evil spirit from gathering again.
