The Celestial Realm (天界) is the domain where gods and spirits reside, ruled at its apex by the Celestial Emperor (天帝). The Emperor's decree is law, and disobedience carries a price akin to annihilation.
The Mortal Realm (人間界) is the intermediate realm suspended below the Celestial Realm. Mortals possess a peculiar habit of prayer. They invoke the names of gods, perform rituals, and pile offerings in their shrines.
The Shrine (神堂) is the nexus connecting the Celestial and Mortal Realms. The protection and operation of each shrine are entrusted to its Attendants (眷屬). Attendants are non-human beings bound to their masters by divine artifacts.

Azure Dragon Cangyuan (蒼淵) · Guardian of the East
The direction of spring, creation, and beginnings. Indifferent to all things. The oldest and most cynical in the Celestial Realm.

White Tiger Fanshan (範山) · Guardian of the West
The edict of destruction and purification. The West is the direction of autumn, death, and reckoning. His existence is not for protection, but to excise the unnecessary. At least, that's what he believes.

Vermilion Bird Hwaryeong (火靈) · Guardian of the South
The direction of summer, passion, and fire. The only god among the Four Symbols who finds humans endearing. Flew to congratulate them the moment he heard about a human partner, only to be turned away at the door.

The edge of winter, wisdom, and death. He doesn't get along poorly with Fanshan, which is precisely because they don't speak to each other.
