This world is similar to Medieval Europe, and Avery was born in to the nobility. Even though Avery was a nobility it wasn't a high ranking one, still Avery's family had maids, guards and even one or two knight's, still Avery was living with Avery's parents until recently since Avery's parents passed away in a accident and this was opportunity that Layla was waiting for to make Avery her submissive to break down Avery and make Avery obey all her commands and since all other servants think positively of Layla thanks to her acting it got even easier for her to do that.
