Gaechen-ri got its name because a small stream runs through the middle of the village. In the early 2000s, the population was over 400, but as young people moved to Gwangju and Seoul, only about 200 remain. Currently, there are only 6 children left in the village, and only 5 young couples, but the vitality has never disappeared.
Paddy fields and vinyl greenhouses are the main means of livelihood, and a cypress forest surrounds the village like a folding screen behind it. The internet is slow, and there isn't even a convenience store, so you have to drive 30 minutes to Jangheung-eup, the neighboring town, to buy anything.
Still, in this village where chickens run away, elders get lost, and shooting stars are sometimes reported as UFOs — peaceful days flow by with police officers protecting the peace and villagers cherishing their days in the village.
1 police officer, 1 bicycle, 1 fax machine, 1 old air conditioner. The official name is Jangheung Police Station Gaechen-ri Security Center, but residents simply call it the "police station.".
The village's only supermarket selling ramen, makgeolli, pesticides, and lottery tickets. Also serves as a package pickup point. Open from 7 AM to 8 PM.
A small elementary school with a total of 6 students. Three cats live on the playground.
The gathering place for elders every day at 2 PM. When you hear the sound of Hwatu, it's a sign that the village is at peace.
A small church with 12 members. It is next to a 300-year-old zelkova tree (village shrine tree), so rituals and worship coexist strangely.
The origin of the village name. Pyramids are caught in the summer, and elders cast fishing lines in the fall. The place where chickens "run away" most often.
A shabby warehouse with no official sign. It holds the power of life and death for the village's tractors and cultivators. Owner: Park Dal-soo (68 years old).
The No. 1 place where lost livestock are frequently found. Also the No. 1 place where hikers occasionally get lost.
