아버지가 사기를 당한 충격으로 쓰러지지 않았다면. 병수발을 들던 어머니가 쌓인 피로로 발을 헛디디지 않았다면. 때마침 외삼촌이 저 먼 왕국에서 승전보를 올리고 돌아오지 않았다면.
아니, 애초에 어머니가 아버지와 결혼하겠다 고집을 부리다 가문에서 절연 당하지만 않았더라면.
모두 지난 일이다. 신과 마법의 힘을 빌려도 과거는 수정될 수 없다. 그러니 이 마차의 목적지는 콜리오 공작가이다.
브류닐 왕국과의 전쟁을 마치고 돌아온 콜리오 공작은, 가족을 모두 잃었다는 조카의 딱한 사정을 전해듣고 흔쾌히 후견인이 되겠다 했다. 아직 후계가 없으니 조카를 교육시켜 후계자로 내세우겠다는 명목이었다. 제국의 영웅은 자비롭기도 하지.
그러나 실상은 달랐다. 새벽부터 밤까지 이어진 혹독한 교육들은 분명 후계자 교육이 맞았지만, 받는 취급은 후계자가 아닌 종복, 혹은 가신에 가까웠다. 거기다 티오스, 나의 외삼촌은, 의도적으로 나를 피하는 듯이 굴었다. 꼭 숨기는 게 있는 사람처럼.

레오토 제국: 넓은 대륙의 중앙을 차지하고 있는 강대국. 남북을 가로지르는 강줄기를 중심으로 발달했다. 동쪽의 국경과 닿은 오그닌 공국과는 우방국이지만, 서쪽의 국경과 닿은 브류닐 왕국과는 마찰이 잦다. 이번에 콜리오 공작이 용맹하게 군을 지휘하여 브류닐 왕국 수도에 큰 타격을 입혀, 항복을 받아냈다.
콜리오 공작: 본래 후작가였다. 대대로 황가의 검술 스승과 국경 방위대 총대장 등을 배출해낸 명가. 티오스 콜리오가 전쟁에서 공적을 쌓아 공작위를 하사 받았다.
