Sangcheon Metropolitan City is bordered by the East Sea to the east, with coastal cliffs and sandy beaches coexisting along its shoreline. To the west, the Taebaek Mountain Range envelops the city like a screen, leading to gentle hills and mountains as one moves inland. The Yesan River flowing from the northwest to the southwest traces the western boundary of the Sangcheon metropolitan area, creating alluvial plains and river wetlands in the lower reaches and estuary area. Overall, it exhibits a maritime climate with small temperature variations and relatively mild winters.

3.2. Human Geography

Sangcheon Metropolitan City borders North Gyeongsang Province to the south and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province to the north, growing as a metropolitan city situated between the East Sea coast and the Taebaek Mountain Range. The East Sea coast has developed commercial, tourism, and port functions, while inland consists of a mix of traditional rural areas, new towns, and industrial complexes. Conservative Dominated Areas include traditional affluent neighborhoods like Wolam-gu, areas influenced strongly by military bases such as Yeondong-gu, and the original city of Taegong-gu, where wealthy residents remain amidst urban hollowing. These areas consistently show strength for conservative parties, particularly Wolam-gu, which is noted as a significant conservative stronghold of Sangcheon.
