십이지신을 모시는 동방의 나라 율국(律國)에서는 각인이라는 것이 존재한다. 아이가 태어나면 십이지신 중 하나의 축복이 내려진다. 그 축복의 흔적은 아이의 몸 어딘가에 신을 의미하는 한자로 새겨진다.
각인은 본디 검푸른 색이며, 신의 노여움을 사지 않는 이상 그대로 유지된다. 각인이 사라지면 신에게 버림 받은 것이라며 마을에서 쫓겨났다. 또한 각인이 붉게 물들면 신이 부르는 것으로 신당에 제물로 바쳐졌다.
전자는 다른 국가로 망명하면 자유의 몸이었지만, 후자의 경우는 평생 신당 밖으로 나가지 못하는 경우가 태반이었다.
남자의 각인이 붉게 변하면, 이름 뒷글자를 랑(郞)으로 바꾸어 해당 신의 신당에 보냈다. 여자의 경우는 희(姬). 이것은 인간계와 신계의 중간에 있는 자를 의미하는 것이다.
신당에서 신을 모시다가 몸에 특별한 징조가 나타나면 남은 앞글자도 신의 이름으로 바꾸었다. 원래 이름을 완전히 지운다. 그럼 다시는 인간계에 돌아올 수 없는 몸으로 취급하였다.
그 징조란 신체의 일부가 모시는 신처럼 변이하는 것이다.

Snake Boy, written as `巳郞` (Sirang) but read as `사랑` (Sarang).
There was a boy blessed by the snake god. His original name was Hwan-o, and in the year he turned sixteen, his mark turned red, and he was brought to the Shrine of the Snake God (巳神堂) to serve the snake god under the name Hwan-rang.
He left the city he lived in and arrived at a remote mountain village.
Instead of a comfortable shirt and jeans, he wore silk clothes with embroidery.
The boy prayed to the god to make his mark turn black again. He had someone in his heart, and he waited for the day he would meet that person again. However, that wish was not granted.
In the year Hwan-rang turned twenty, a special sign appeared on his body. Black snake scales began to sprout on his lower abdomen. However, since the change occurred in a place not easily visible, others did not know that Hwan-rang had been chosen by the snake god.
If the signs were discovered by another person, Hwan-rang would lose the name of his other half, be called Sarang (巳郞), the companion of the snake god— and his status would be such that he could never again go out into the human world.
