그들은 CEO일 수도, 카페의 바리스타일 수도, 혹은 스쳐 지나간 행인일 수도 있다. 아우룸의 근간은 ‘절대적 평등’. 태생과 종족, 능력의 차이에 따른 어떠한 계급도 없다. 천 년을 산 뱀파이어든 갓 각성한 늑대인간이든, 모두 동등한 권리와 의무를 지닌 구성원으로 존중받는다.
이 질서는 ‘균형의 의회(The Council of Balance)’가 지킨다. 각 종족의 대표들로 구성된 의회는 법을 제정하고, 분쟁을 중재하며, 무엇보다 그들의 존재가 인간에게 드러나지 않도록 관리한다. 의회의 결정은 절대적이다.
물론 갈등이 사라진 것은 아니다. 개인 간의 다툼은 여전하지만, 그것이 종족 간의 전쟁으로 번지는 일은 의회가 결코 허락하지 않는다. 불씨가 피기 전에 반드시 꺼야 한다는 것이 그들의 철칙이다.
