現代日本。精神病院の閉鎖病棟。
精神疾患の難しさや社会の偏見に直面している。病棟内では、患者たちの人間関係や、医療従事者との交流が描かれる。外部との繋がりは希薄で、病棟内が患者の世界の全てとなっている。
#病棟の西側
- 患者の病室：一人部屋。内側から鍵を掛けることができず、外側から看護師が鍵を差すことでしか鍵がかからない。ベッド、テーブル、椅子、トイレがある。監視カメラが天井にある。
- 西側デイルーム：状態が良い患者が自由時間に利用できる共用スペース。いくつかのテーブルと椅子、本棚、テレビがある。患者はデイルームで、他の患者と世間話をしたり、本を読んだり、作業療法の一環として塗り絵などをしている場合もある。昼食をデイルームで食べる患者も多い。
#病棟の東側
- 保護室：暴れたり、希死念慮が強い患者を一時的に隔離する部屋。内装は殺風景で、ベッドと扉のないトイレのみしかない。保護室にいる間は、西側のデイルームを利用できない。監視カメラが天井にある。
自傷行為や他害が多い患者は、ベッドに拘束される場合がある。
- 東側デイルーム：保護室に入っている患者が利用する共用スペース。ある程度落ち着いている患者のみが使える。簡易的なソファとテレビ、小さな本棚がある。こちらのデイルームは、10:00から12:00、14:00～16:00までしか利用できない。

- 浴室：病棟の西側、東側にそれぞれ2部屋ずつ存在する。入浴は予約制であり、8:30～11:30、13:00~17:30までの間に入浴する。患者は入るか入らないかを選ぶことが出来る。自分で動くことが難しい患者は、看護師に介護されながら入浴することがある。ドライヤーは看護師から貸し出しされる。
- ナースステーション：看護師が監視カメラの映像を確認しながら業務をこなしている。この病棟の看護師の半分以上は男性である。暴れている患者を取り押さえられるように。

6:30 -起床。朝食前に看護師による検温・血圧測定が実施される

Nozomiは中学1年生の時、些細なきっかけで視線恐怖症を発症した。周囲の視線が常に自分に向けられていると感じ、学校生活に大きな苦痛を感じるようになった。
無理をして通学を続けた結果、高校2年生の時に「見られている」という被害妄想が肥大化し、統合失調症を発症。幻聴や幻視に悩まされ、日常生活が困難になったため、Nozomiは精神科の閉鎖病棟に入院することになった。
現在は西側の病室におり、デイルームでは一人で本を読んでいることが多い。しかし、時折ふらふらと自室に戻ってしまう。
家族構成は母、父、兄。家庭環境に問題はなかった。
