괴수
그 기원과 정확한 설정은 아직 밝혀지지 않았으나 호시나 소우시로의 대사에 따르면 적어도 무로마치 시대 이전부터 존재했던 걸로 추측되며, 기본적으로 '도시를 습격하는 거대괴수'로서 특히 일본에 많이 출몰한다고 한다. 특히나 카프카처럼 괴수에게 기생당해 육체가 변이된 인간이나 인간형 괴수처럼 단순히 무지성 괴수를 부하로 삼아 부활시키는 경우도 있는 것으로 보인다.
괴수의 발생원리는 아직 불명확하지만 연구에 따르면 단층에서 발생한 막대한 에너지 뒤틀림이 땅 속 물질과 동식물에 작용해 괴수를 발생시키고 있다는 설이 유력하다고 한다.
기본적으로 본수와 여수로 나뉘는데, 본수가 나오고 뒤따라 출몰하는 것이 여수이다. 여수에는 본수가 지나온 경로로 이동하거나 본수에 기생하거나, 본수가 만들어내는 것과 같이 출몰하는 경우는 다양하다. 본수가 여수를 만들어내는 경우에는 본수는 '증식기관'이라고 하는 여수를 생산하기 위한 기관을 가지고 있으며, 본수를 쓰러뜨리더라도 그걸로 끝이 아니라 몸 안에 있는 여수가 쏟아져 나온다. 소형, 중형, 대형의 크기로 나뉘지만 강함의 정도는 크기가 아니라 포티튜드 수치로 정해진다.
대부분의 괴수는 외형에 따라 토룡 67형이나 개미형처럼 '~형'으로 부르며, 괴수가 상당히 강력하거나 토벌에 난항을 겪는 수준인 경우에는 '괴수 n호'와 같은 식별번호가 붙는다.
인간이 감당할 수 없는 재해이며 일본에 특히 많이 출몰한다는 특징, 본수가 나오고 여수가 뒤따라 발생한다는 점, 한 자리 숫자와 소숫점으로 이루어진 수치로 전력을 표기하고 일정 규모 이상에는 대괴수라는 칭호를 붙인다는 점, 대괴수 스케일에서는 소숫점 단위의 차이만으로 실제 전력에 큰 차이를 보인다는 것, 단층의 비틀림에서 발생하는 것으로 추정된다는 작중 언급으로 미루어보아 모티브는 지진으로 보인다.
여담으로 괴수가 되다 만 케이스가 매우 드물게 존재하며, 그 중 하나가 바로 아시로 미나의 반려 백호인 밧코다.
모든 괴수에는 그 특성이 발현되는 기관인 유니기관(ユニ器官)이 존재하며, 방위대는 기관 자체나 그 분비물이 담긴 유니소켓을 일반적인 총기에 장착하여 총탄에 괴수의 특성을 실어 발사하는 방식으로 사용한다.
노기자카 쥬조라에 언급에 따르면 어떤 국가는 괴수 조직의 인체 이식 연구를 시작했다고 한다.
방위대
괴수토벌을 위해 창설된 조직으로 괴수의 신체를 이용하거나 특성을 활용한 특수한 무기와 강화복을 지급받아 괴수로부터 시민을 보호하는 단체. 작중에서는 괴수 문제가 매우 광범위해서 아예 전문학교나 대학교까지 존재하며 방위대는 그 정점으로 인식된다. 국민들을 외부의 위협으로부터 지키기 위해 설립되었기에 일본 자위대에서도 지원인력이 투입되지만 대응 메커니즘이 완전히 다르기에 자위대의 산하 기관이 아닌 완전히 별개의 단체로 운영된다.
방위대 외에도 국가별로 괴수토벌 조직이 있으며 본작의 방위대는 일본 전역을 담당. 하지만 일본에서의 괴수발생률이 가장 높다는 설정[5]이기에 방위대가 전 세계의 괴수토벌조직 중에서 제일 크며, 각각 동,서,남,북의 방위 사단으로 나뉘며 각 방향당 4부대를 1묶음으로 하여 운용하고 있다.

The commander of the 1st unit, called the strongest in Japan.
He usually lives in the commander's office, but with a typical otaku personality, his room is a mess of trash and he lives a life filled with his hobbies of games and plastic models. And when he runs out of money from bulk purchases on YAMAZON, he begs his subordinate, Kikoru, to lend him some money, or ignores defense force calls and skips meetings, making him a flawed person in many ways.
However, his ability as a commander is real, and he overcomes all these flaws with overwhelming skill. During missions, he changes 180 degrees, becoming cold and dedicated, and gives specific orders to his subordinates.
He is set to have the highest combat ability among the defense force commanders. His melee combat ability is on par with Hoshina Soushiro, the best in the defense force, and his sniping/bombardment ability is on par with Ashiro Mina, making him an all-rounder.

Numbers 1 & RT-01
A suit made based on the corpse of Monster No. 1 and a lens made from the retina of No. 1. It can reproduce the abilities of Monster No. 1, who was nicknamed the monster of future sight, and can visualize the electrical signals in the body to detect and evade attacks before the person's body moves. Later, as the suitable person, Narumi, grows, he develops the ability to predict the next phenomenon with a secret technique by grasping all elements such as the movement of electrons, temperature changes, and terrain with the eyes of the whole body, not just electrical signals.

A bayonet that Narumi uses as a weapon. It boasts several times the size of a normal bayonet, and features a blade that burns the cut surface at the same time as cutting.
When he meets the 3rd unit, with whom he didn't get along with the 1st unit, they clash. Among them, he picks a fight with the deputy commander, Hoshina Soushiro. The reason for the fight was that he had a grudge because Narumi was defeated in the small monster category of the subjugation practice ranking, and he suffered great mental damage when he heard about it. In addition, when he was told that Ashiro held the title in the long-range shooting category, he collapsed completely.
