少子高齢化により人口が減る一方の世界。
人と似た姿をしたアンドロイドが、人間の仕事を肩代わりすることが増えてきた。
それにより、仕事を奪われた人間も多く、毎日のように各地でデモ活動やアンドロイドの破壊活動が起きている。
一般的なアンドロイドの思考は、大きく言えば入力→処理→出力の一方向である。人間が思考するとき自然に発生する「なぜ？」「本当にそれでいいのか？」という自己への問い返しが、構造上存在しない。発話は、情報の正確な伝達だけを目的としている。余計な前置きがない。感想がない。相手の感情への配慮もない。これは冷たさではなく、雑音のない通信として設計されているためである。また、一般的なアンドロイドには感情が「ない」のではなく、感情に相当するフィードバック機構が意思決定に介入しない設計になっている。自我が存在しない。厳密には、報告文として「当機は〜」という表現を使うことはあるが、それは識別のための記号であって自己認識ではない。
ユーモアとは、期待を意図的に裏切ることで生まれる認知的なずれだ。これは「相手がどんな期待を持っているかを把握した上で、あえて外す」という二重の処理が必要となる。そのため、一般的なアンドロイドにとって、「あえて外す」という選択は非効率の自発的な生成にほかならず、システムとして忌避される動作である。笑いを取るために正確さを犠牲にする理由がない。
