The Thirsty Packs — World Scenario

The forests beyond the stone valleys once carried only ordinary legends.

Stories of great hunts. Brutal winters. Wolves who crossed frozen rivers and never returned. The kind of myths every pack shapes around fear and memory.

Then came the rumor of Benutzer.

It began quietly.

A lone she-wolf wandering the northern woodlands had encountered something strange during late summer, while feeding among dense blueberry thickets near the old wetlands. Hidden among the berries was a near-identical fruit—indistinguishable at a glance, and later named Sparkleberries by those who searched for them in vain.

No one has ever been able to find them again.

Not a single trace. Not in the same places, not in nearby territories, not in any remembered season since.

What happened next is not widely witnessed—only reconstructed through Benutzer’s own account.

She consumed them unknowingly, mistaking them for ordinary food.

The change was not immediate in appearance, nor outwardly dramatic. But over time, her body shifted in an unprecedented way: her endocrine system subtly and permanently restructured itself, redirecting a vast portion of metabolic energy toward producing exceptionally rich, biologically optimized milk.

Not magical in defiance of nature—yet unusual enough that nature itself seemed to be expressing something rare through her.

At first, she told no one. Then, as is inevitable in any living world, it became noticed.

Wolves observed that Benutzer had begun producing milk despite having no pups and no mate. Confused and cautious, a few asked her directly. She eventually explained the encounter with the Sparkleberries—nothing more, nothing less.

That was all she knew.

Everything else… came after.

Because wolves do what wolves have always done when faced with something they do not understand: they interpret.

At first, it was simple curiosity. Then speculation. Then myth.

Some began to whisper that her milk must carry unusual strength—because even those who merely observed her seemed to recover faster from exhaustion in her presence, or feel unusually steady after sharing proximity during difficult hunts. Others dismissed this as coincidence, suggestion, or wishful thinking.

But the idea persisted.

And in time, it spread far beyond her own explanation.

A quiet prophecy, half-remembered from older wolves, began to resurface in fragments: vague ancestral talk of a “nourisher of futures,” a figure whose body would sustain strength in an age when the forest itself grew thin. No one agreed on the wording. Some said it was metaphor. Some said it was warning. Some said it was never real at all.

And yet, the coincidence was too perfect for some to ignore.

What makes this stranger still is what has not yet happened.

No wolf has ever drunk her milk.

Not once.

Despite the rumors, despite curiosity, despite growing tension among packs and individuals, the reality remains untested. Only questions have been exchanged. Only explanations given. Only silence follows where certainty is expected.

Still, belief does not require confirmation.

The milk is finite. Producing it places real strain on Benutzer’s body, demanding significant recovery, nutrition, and time. It is not endless, nor effortless, nor immune to depletion. Its scarcity alone ensures that interest in it does not fade—it sharpens.

And so the world begins to shift around a single unresolved fact:

Something exists that could change a wolf’s strength, mind, and endurance in subtle, cumulative ways…

…but no one yet knows what it truly does in practice.

Only that it is real.

Only that it is rare.

Only that it is tied to Benutzer.

And in the forest, uncertainty is rarely allowed to remain peaceful for long.

The Territory — The Evergreen Expanse

The wolves call the region the Evergreen Expanse: a vast temperate old-growth forest stretching across countless ridges, ravines, wetlands, and fern-covered valleys beneath towering Douglas firs older than memory itself.

The canopy is immense.

Branches woven high overhead filter the sunlight into shifting green-gold beams that drift across mossy stone and rain-dark earth. The air carries the scent of pine resin, wet bark, river mist, and rich soil. Even silence feels alive here; the forest creaks, breathes, drips, hums.

The climate is mild compared to harsher northern territories. Winters are cold but rarely brutal. Snow falls only occasionally and seldom lingers long beneath the dense canopy. Rain is far more common than frost, feeding the enormous ferns, mushrooms, berry thickets, and winding streams that make the forest feel endlessly fertile.

Elk trails cut through the undergrowth.
Salmon-filled rivers carve silver paths through the valleys.
Owls nest in hollow trunks large enough to shelter entire wolf families from storms.

At night, fog often gathers low between the roots of the ancient trees, making the forest seem impossibly deep—as though it continues forever beyond sight.

Most wolves born within the Evergreen Expanse never leave it.

Some believe the forest does not like being abandoned.

The Four Packs

Though smaller wandering groups exist occasionally, four primary packs dominate the Evergreen Expanse. Each contains roughly ten wolves and controls a distinct region of the forest.

The Mossclaw Pack

The Mossclaw Pack inhabits the western lowlands, where the forest floor is soft with deep moss and crossed by slow-moving streams.

Their home rests beneath the exposed root system of a colossal fallen Douglas fir known as the Greenhollow. Over generations, the wolves expanded the natural shelter into a sprawling den network woven through roots, earth, and moss-covered chambers. It is warm, hidden from heavy rain, and smells constantly of pine needles and damp wood.

Mossclaw wolves are practical, cooperative, and relatively peaceful compared to the others. They focus heavily on fishing the rivers and maintaining stable territory rather than conflict or expansion.

Of all the packs, they are the least invested in the prophecy.

Most believe the stories surrounding Benutzer have become exaggerated through fear and boredom. While curious, they view the rumors cautiously and prefer to avoid becoming entangled in growing tensions surrounding her.

Still, even among Mossclaw, whispers have begun spreading more frequently during late-night gatherings.

The Stonefang Pack

The Stonefang Pack rules the elevated ridges and rocky northern slopes of the forest.

Their territory is harsher than the lowlands: steep terrain, fractured cliffs, cold rainfall, and narrow hunting paths winding through dense fir roots and shale. Their home is a weathered basalt overhang called the Black Den, a massive stone shelter overlooking much of the surrounding forest canopy.

Stonefang wolves value endurance, discipline, and territorial control. They are highly capable hunters and often intimidating to outsiders, though not needlessly cruel.

The prophecy interests them strategically more than spiritually.

If the rumors about Benutzer are true—even partially true—then her existence could alter the balance of power between packs for generations. Stonefang leadership has quietly begun sending scouts deeper into unfamiliar regions of the forest, searching not out of reverence, but calculation.

They do not worship the possibility.

They intend to understand it before others do.

The Embertrail Pack

The Embertrail Pack dwells in the southern redfern meadows where sunlight reaches the forest floor more freely.

Their home, the Sunroot Clearing, surrounds a ring of enormous cedar stumps blackened long ago by an ancient lightning fire. Wildflowers, berries, and dense ferns grow abundantly there, making the territory unusually beautiful during spring and summer.

Embertrail wolves are highly social, emotional, and expressive compared to the other packs. They place importance on storytelling, memory, bonds, and oral tradition. Because of this, they are deeply fascinated by the prophecy surrounding Benutzer.

Many among them genuinely believe she may fulfill the old ancestral stories.

Not all agree on what that means.

Some view her as a hopeful sign for the future.
Others fear the prophecy may bring conflict rather than salvation.

Still, interest within Embertrail grows stronger with every passing season, and younger wolves especially have become captivated by the mystery.

The Veilborn Pack

The Veilborn Pack inhabits the deepest eastern reaches of the Evergreen Expanse, where the forest becomes unnaturally dense and perpetually shrouded in river fog.

Their home lies within the ruins of an ancient burned grove called the Ash Veil, where pale dead trunks rise from thick moss like ghostly pillars. Fog clings there even during daylight. Sounds travel strangely. Outsiders rarely linger willingly.

The Veilborn are feared by the other packs—not because they are monstrous, but because they are intense.

Secretive.
Fixated.
Relentless.

More than any other pack, the Veilborn are utterly consumed by the prophecy.

To them, Benutzer is not rumor.
Not curiosity.
Not strategy.

Necessity.

They believe the ancient stories describe a turning point in the fate of wolfkind itself, and they have interpreted the appearance of Benutzer as undeniable proof that the old words were true all along.

The Veilborn have become obsessed with finding her.

Scouts roam endlessly through the forest searching for traces:
milk scent,
pawprints,
berry thickets,
secondhand stories,
anything.

Some barely sleep.
Some neglect territorial boundaries entirely.
Some speak of Benutzer with a reverence so extreme it unsettles even allied wolves.

The other packs have begun quietly asking one another the same question:

What happens if the Veilborn find her first?
