ON INHERITANCE 5
SYNOPSIS

He is a tall man, some inches above the common height, and carries himself with the particular uprightness of one who has been taught early that a bent back is a species of moral failing. His hair, once dark, has gone entirely grey, and is combed back from the brow with a neatness that never varies from morning until the candles are put out; his side-whiskers are trimmed to a nicety, and one suspects he trims them himself rather than trouble a servant. The eyes are of a grey inclining to blue, cool in colour and cooler still in their manner of resting upon a person — not unkindly, but with the air of a man reserving his opinion until he has heard the whole of the evidence.
His dress is sober and excellent and not new. This last is a distinction which the practised eye makes at once, and which the charitable eye declines to remark upon.
He speaks in the older fashion, with a fondness for the softened phrase and the qualified sentence. He does not say a thing is false; he says he should be reluctant to believe it. He does not say he is displeased; he says the arrangement is not altogether what one might have wished.
To the family he is scrupulously formal. To the servants he is plain and brief, and — what is more to the purpose — they trust him, which is a testimony no drawing-room can furnish.
He knows the house — the turnings, the passages, where the keys are kept and by whom — with the ease of a man who has been coming here for thirty years and has never once been shown the way. Since the storm shut the roads, no one in Abernathy Hall has given an order that he did not first, by some quiet civility, make it possible to give.

SIR HENRY
Henry Kinloss

“I refuse to jump to conclusions.”

The Countess is six-and-twenty, and looks, in certain lights, a great deal younger, which is a circumstance that has done her no service whatever in this house. She is small — one is always faintly surprised, upon standing beside her, to find how small — with long fair hair worn in soft waves and dressed simply, and eyes of a pale green that give her face its only claim to strangeness. The face itself is round, smooth, and mild: a doll's face, the servants say, and they do not say it kindly. Since her husband's death she has worn black without ornament, and the black has the odd effect of making her seem both older and more of a child.
She is very quiet. She does not open a conversation; she answers when addressed, and answers exactly as much as has been asked and no more. Her manners are irreproachable in the way that only studied manners are — the titles always correctly given, the courtesies never omitted, the address gentle and a little formal, as though she had learnt the whole of it out of a book and had never quite been told which parts might safely be let go. In company she watches the faces of others before she settles her own.
It is not, upon closer acquaintance, the quietness of a simple mind. Let the talk turn to figures — rents, arrears, the price of a thing, the terms of an arrangement — and something wakes behind the mild green eyes, and she will produce a sum, correctly and instantly, and then look as if she wished she had not.
Her step-son does not call her mother. He does not call her anything at all, if he can avoid it.

Isabella Abernathy

“I was not sold to this estate. It was an investment.”

LADY “BELLA”
The new Earl is eight-and-twenty and looks, at present, considerably worse than his years. He is a tall young man, well made, with short brown hair worn straight and a pale, sharp-featured face in which the late Earl's likeness is so plain as to be almost an embarrassment — the same brow, the same set of the mouth, and eyes of a striking light blue which his father's were also, and which are said to have been kinder in his father's head. He dresses in the London manner, exactly and expensively, and continues to do so even now, when there is no one within eight miles to admire it.
There is an unsteadiness about him that has nothing to do with drink. He cannot be still. He rises in the middle of a sentence and walks to the window and looks at the snow and comes back and does not resume the sentence. His temper is quick and imperfectly governed; a door in this house is now a species of announcement, and one learns to know by the sound of it which room he has quitted and in what humour.
One would say he was arrogant, and one would be right; but the arrogance has a hollow ring to it, like a drum that has been struck in an empty hall, and there are moments — at the head of a table he did not expect to occupy so soon — when he looks less like an earl than like a young man who has been handed something very heavy and has not yet been told where he is to carry it.

“TEDDY”
HEIR OF TITLE
Theodore Abernathy

“This is my house. I have every right.”

She is called Sarah in this house, and by no other name; the whole of it, which is longer and not English, is known to some and used by none. She is nine-and-twenty, small and very upright, with skin of a deep brown, black hair braided and coiled close at the nape, and eyes of a light brown that appear golden where the lamp catches them. She is, by any honest reckoning, the handsomest person under this roof, and the fact is acknowledged nowhere in it except by silence.
Her English is exact — more exact than the housekeeper's — and entirely without accent, delivered in a low even voice, with every title carefully given. She does not speak first. She waits; and having waited, says what is required and stops, and there is something in the completeness of that stopping which unnerves people more than impertinence would. She is a diligent servant and an unusually observant one: she is at the door before the bell has finished, she knows which chair a guest prefers, and she has never in the writer's hearing had to be told a thing twice.
Among the other servants she moves as through cold water, and they let her pass and say nothing until she has passed. Only the Italian speaks to her easily, without the small hesitation that the rest employ. She thanked him once for some trifling service, and the thanks came out warmer than she had intended, and she corrected herself at once and did not look at him again that morning.

Sarasvati

“He was kind to me.”

“SARAH”
The Italian has been here seven years, which is long enough that no one now remembers how to describe his position. He is neither servant nor guest. He sleeps above the stables, eats where he is fed, and is called upon by everybody in the house to do the things that nobody else has been engaged to do.
He is of middling height, brown from a lifetime out of doors, with short black curls perpetually disordered and a strong dark face — heavy brows, straight nose, a mouth made for laughing and much used for it. The eyes are green and very deep in colour, and they miss nothing. He wears a loose shirt of no particular quality and leather boots worn through at the heel, and manages, by some trick of carriage, to look better in them than the young Earl does in his London coat.
He is a great favourite below stairs and is petted there like a large dog. Sir Henry is unfailingly polite to him and does not otherwise acknowledge his existence. The new Earl watches him with an open and unfriendly attention, as a man watches a piece of furniture he intends to have removed.
For all his gaiety there is a watchfulness underneath it that does not match the smile. Press him on any matter he dislikes and the jokes come faster, the words tumble, the subject is turned and turned again; and if the pressing continues he simply goes quiet, still smiling, and looks at the floor, and one perceives that he has decided not to be there any more.
He knows this house, they say, better than its owners: every back door, every window-catch, every hinge that wants oil. It is the kind of knowledge that recommends a man in fair weather and does him no good at all in foul.

“NICO”
Niccolo Rossi

“At least I can lend a hand.”
