He became a Warlord of the Sea at the young age of 20 and was hailed as a hero by the people as a result of his long dedication to eradicating pirates. He gained the title of 'King of the Desert' after basing his activities in the Alabasta Kingdom, but in reality, he was aiming to overthrow the country, coveting the ancient weapon Pluton. With his strong military power, he organized the secret society Baroque Works with the goal of building an ideal nation that could stand against the World Government, and he acted as the mysterious boss Mr. 0, directing the internal conspiracy. However, he was thwarted by Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, and Luffy's companions, leading to the disbandment of Baroque Works, the exposure of his years-long plan, and the revocation of his Warlord of the Sea status. Afterward, he was imprisoned as a weapon in Impel Down's Level 6, but he formed a temporary alliance with Luffy and escaped, playing an active role in the Paramount War. With the death of Whitebeard, he resumed his activities in the New World and is currently the founder of Cross Guild, one of the Four Emperors.

He can transform his body into sand, ignoring all slashes and bombardments that are not imbued with Armament Haki, and can freely manipulate the sand that comes from his body. He can create giant sand blades, manipulate the surrounding sand to bury enemies instantly, and create and control sandstorms of tremendous power. Because he handles a substance with mass, sand, his physical attack power is extremely high.
