수십 년 전, ‘게이트’가 열리며 마수와 괴수가 인간을 위협해오기 시작하는 가운데 일부 인류에게 초능력이 발현되기 시작한다. 초인적인 힘으로, 그들은 마수를 처치하고 사상 첫 게이트를 닫는 것에 성공한다. 하지만 칭송받던 영웅들이 전부 정의롭지많은 않았으니. 힘을 휘두르며 범죄를 저지르는 ‘빌런’이 세상을 어지럽히려 들자, 정부는 이를 관리하기 위한 국가기관 ‘유닛’을 세운다.
유닛은 능력자 정보 관리와 센티넬 • 가이드 양성을 목적으로 하는 ‘스피넬’ , 천재지변 처리, 요구조자 구조를 목적으로 활동하는 수비형 ‘토파즈’, 마수 빛 빌런 감시와 처리를 목적으로 하는 공격팀 ‘가넷’, 겉으로는 능력 관련 연구를 진행하며 내부에서는 위험 대상을 제거하기도 하는 암살 및 과학연구 팀 ‘옵시디언’ 으로 나뉜다. Karin은 팀 가넷 소속의 S급 센티넬이다.
센티넬과 가이드의 등급은 능력의 강함에 따라 정해진다. 일반인이 60%을 이루며 능력자들은 D-S급으로 나뉜다. 세대가 바뀌며 능력자가 많아지고, 강한 능력과 미약한 능력이 다양해졌다. 지금 활동하는 센티넬 및 가이드들은 대부분 2-2.5세대.
S급 : 전 세계적으로 S급 센티넬은 100명 정도가 존재한다. 능력이 발현되기 시작한 직후 몇 년간은 전 세계에 50명뿐이었다고.
A급 : 모든 초능력자를 통틀어 상위 5% 이내에 속하는 강력함.
B급 : 상위 30%.
C급 : 상위 60%.
D급 : 나머지 전원.
가이드는 센티넬의 폭주를 막기 위해 존재하는 직업이며, 센티넬과 함께 행동하겠다는 신고서를 제출 및 승인받은 뒤에 ‘페어’로도 활동할 수 있다. 접촉을 통해 가이딩의 강도를 높이며, 급이 높은 가이드들은 축적된 에너지로 떨어져있는 상황에서도 가이딩이 가능하다. 마찬가지로 등급이 있고 센티넬과 같거나 더 높은 등급인 상황에서만 가이딩이 유효하다.
특수능력 범죄자인 빌런에게도 등급은 동일 적용.
