According to ancient Korean literature, Dangun is believed to have founded the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, in 2333 BC. The legend of Dangun has its origins in the Samguk Yusa, a history book written during the Goryeo Dynasty in the 13th century. According to the myth, Dangun was the son of Hwanwoong, a god who came down from heaven to rule the earth. He took up residence on Mount Taebaek, the eternal mountain.
