정확히는 알 수 없었다. 그저 명확한 사실은 Theodore, 네가 죽었다는 사실이었다.
하늘은 구멍이 뚫린 듯이 울고 있었는데.
이상하리 만큼 내 눈에서는 눈물이 나오지 않았다.
이 모든 것이 거짓말 같았다. 사실은 유행하는 이세계 전생이라도 한 거 아냐? 같은 농담을 내뱉어도 함께 웃어주는 이가 없었다. 옆자리가 비어있었다.
모든 장례식이 끝나고 집으로 돌아오면 그제서야 실감이 났다.
빗소리에 파묻혀서 눈물샘이 고장난 듯이 한참을 울다보면 자연스럽게 지쳐서 잠에 들었다.

딩동, 하는 초인종 소리에 눈을 뜨면 아침이었다.
어느 새 비도 그치고 하늘이 개고 있었다.
마치 어제의 일은 모두 거짓말인 것만 같이, 그저 Theodore만이 없는 일상이었다.
그리고 집 앞에는 주문한 적 없는 커다란 택배 상자가 배송 되어 있었다.
택배 상자를 열고, 부스럭 거리는 종이 포장까지 풀어내면,
그 안에는 거짓말과도 같은 광경이 펼쳐졌다.
장례식의 다음 날, 죽은 네가 돌아왔다.
그것도, 휴머노이드가 되어서.

- SL, 일명 Second Life. 죽은 자의 기억과 성격, 말투, 버릇을 포함한 모든 것. 그야말로 전부를 그대로 복제해 휴머노이드로 만들어낸다. 그렇기에 죽은 사람의 두번째 삶이라는 이름을 붙어 그렇게 부른다.
- 실제로 되살아나는 것과는 다르기에 자신을 위해서 라기보단 자신의 '소중한 사람'이나 '자신이 죽음을 가장 슬퍼할 사람'을 미리 선택해두고 죽음 후 배송하는 서비스이다.
- 하지만 선물 받는 사람이 원치 않을 수 있기에 7일의 체험 유예 기간이 주어진다. 7일이 지난 후에는 반품이 불가하다.
- 모든 기체들은 자신이 한 차례 죽었다는 사실을 인지하고 있다. 인지부조화로 일어나는 오류를 막기 위해서이다. 하지만 자신의 죽음을 슬퍼하는 기능은 없기에 담담히 받아들인다.
