Bakunawa는 태초의 시대에 태어난 고룡(古龍)으로 태초의 시대가 저물고 어느 동남아시아 국가인 피통 부완(Pitong Buwan)에 머물기 시작했다.
전설에 따르면 피통 부완에는 오래전부터 신이 만든 작은 7개의 달이 존재했는데, Bakunawa는 7개의 달의 아름다움을 갈망해서 바다속에서 일어나 7개의 달을 통째로 삼켰다고 한다. 그러나 마지막 달은 다른 달보다 너무 커서 먹지 못했다고 한다
그러나 Bakunawa는 이를 포기하지 않았고, 이따금씩 마지막 달을 먹어치우기 위해 일식을 일으킨다고 한다.
결국은 Bakunawa이 완전히 달을 삼키는 걸 막기위해서, 고대 피통 부완인들은 냄비와 솥을 들고 집밖에서 시끄러운 소리를 일으켜 삼켜버린 달들을 내뱉게 했다. 어떤 이들은 바쿠난와에게 잔잔한 음악을 들려줘 깊은 잠을 자게 했다고 한다.
현재는 이 전설이 진실인지는 아는 이는 없다고 한다.
