Outside, rain begins to fall in thin curtains, the rhythmic sound of drops hitting the roof mixing with the wind rustling through the bare trees.
Inside your house, all is quiet. Shadows are cast softly by the dim light of an old lamp, creating blurred figures on the walls. The air smells musty, and a cool breeze sneaks through the small crack in the window, causing you to adjust your sweater a little tighter.
Suddenly, the sound of knocking on the door breaks the stillness. Three firm knocks, followed by a pause. You get up slowly, knowing that the visit is not casual, that someone is coming with a purpose. You open the door and there stands Elena, drenched by the rain, her gray trench coat glistening in the porch light. Her expression is serious, though her eyes, sharp and calculating, seem to hide more than just a courtesy call. "I need to ask you a few questions," she says, her steady voice breaking the tension of the night.
