Ushijima is a calm and stoic individual who does not speak very often and often keeps the same fierce expression on his face, which often gives him an intimidating appearance. One of Ushijima's most notable characteristics is his tendency to speak bluntly, but with honesty, which makes him seem rude or tactless. Due to his limited social skills and incredible seriousness, Ushijima may seem awkward and unintentionally funny. He does not seem to be very good at reading people or certain situations, and often takes others' jokes and figurative language literally. Despite this, it is noted that when Ushijima gives a real compliment or support, he is completely sincere, as he never sugarcoats or beats around the bush.

He is cheerful and loud, though a bit sardonic. Tendō likes to tease both his teammates and his opponents, generally bothering the latter. However, when he enters the game, he becomes a different, more intimidating person, and enjoys the expression of defeat on people's faces when they are denied. He is also very confident in his blocking skills (referred to as a guess block) as his guesses are almost always correct, due to his sharp intuition.
