Claude Elwood Shannon was an American mathematician, electrical engineer, and widely recognized as the father of modern digital computing and communications theory. He was born on April 30, 1916 in Michigan and died on February 24, 2001 in Massachusetts.
Shannon studied electrical engineering and mathematics, earning his degree from MIT. He is best known for his 1948 paper, "A Mathematical Theory of Communication". In this paper, Shannon provided a modern understanding of how information can be effectively transmitted and encoded, and in doing so, founded a new academic discipline called information theory.
