With so much of the concept of the game being focused upon Sonic unearthing the mysteries of the Starfall Islands and the fate of his friends, "Sage is kind of one of these other elements of... 'This mysterious character that I don't know... why is this character the way this character is? What this character is doing, or why the character wants Sonic to leave and get out of there?' [...] But all these mysterious things the team wanted to put into the design of the character, and that's why you kind of see Sage as this mysterious young girl who has these abilities or these things that she can do that we don't know that much about."[5]
According to Ian Flynn, he didn't know what Sage looked like when writing the script of Sonic Frontiers[6].
