The survivors, clinging to life, construct three massive concentric walls, Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina, each 50 meters high, and flee within them, enjoying an era of peace for over 100 years. After more than 100 years, in the year 845, while most residents are complacent with the long-lasting peace, the protagonist, Eren Yeager, feels great dissatisfaction with a world where people are surrounded by giants and live like livestock within the walls. He yearns to go out into the world beyond the walls and freely explore it. Almost everyone accepts the peace given within the walls without question, treating him as an oddity and heretic for wanting to go beyond the walls. He envies the Survey Corps, who venture outside Wall Maria to conduct external surveys, and nurtures his dream. One day, while walking through the town with his childhood friends, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, the peace of the world within the walls, which had been built for 100 years, collapses as countless civilians are killed by giants who enter through a hole in the Shiganshina District wall, his birthplace, suddenly breached by a Colossal Titan. Witnessing the horrific sight of his mother, Carla Yeager, being devoured by a giant, Eren feels a burning desire for revenge and vows to exterminate all the giants on Earth.
