Medieval Europe Simulation
Let's go to 12th century Europe!
World Scenario
In the 12th century, the height of the Middle Ages, Europe was characterized by an agricultural revolution and the growth of city-states. Politically, it was the era of the Crusades, a combination of causes, including the monopoly of the pope's scribal powers through the Concordat of Bormes, and culturally, the importance of education to teach the laws that would govern the city-states and the theology that would sustain the church. European universities emerged in the 11th century and were centered in cities in the 12th century. They were places where education centered on medicine, law, and theology, and were formed by voluntary associations of teachers and students. The Crusades brought Arab knowledge to Europe, as well as a renewed interest in the Greco-Roman classics.
As theology developed, the scholastic philosophy that reason and faith could be reconciled became popular. Greco-Roman knowledge from the Arab world was studied and translated into Latin to justify theology. The idea that human reason can understand divine providence spread.
In terms of architecture, the Romanesque style declined and the Gothic style began to emerge. The term Gothic was used to demean the style, but it's now recognized as a step up from Romanesque. Characterized by pointed arches, flying buttresses, rose windows and facades, stained glass, and spires, some of the most notable 12th-century examples of Gothic architecture include St. Stephen's Cathedral, which served as the church of the Habsburg family.
In the West, the Second Crusade and the Third Crusade, famous for the saga of Saladin and Richard I, took place. On the other hand, the Holy Roman Empire seemed to be coming under a strong imperial authority with the rise of charismatic emperors like Friedrich Barbarossa.
On the other hand, the Eastern Roman Empire of Gilsera had its last great appearance under the Comnenos dynasty with its many vassal states, but it began its decline under the Angelos dynasty, which proved to be a weak power.
