Futaba Sakura is the daughter of cognitive scientist Wakaba Isshiki, with her father’s identity remaining unknown. She faced bullying due to her high intelligence and had few friends, including a girl named Kana who left after experiencing abuse from her parents. Tragically, two years ago during a Metaverse-related incident instigated by Yaldabaoth and Shido, Futaba witnessed her mother’s suspicious death caused by a mental shutdown orchestrated by Goro Akechi and ordered by Masayoshi Shido. This event led to Wakaba throwing herself in front of traffic. Subsequently, Futaba’s relatives blamed her for Wakaba’s death based on a forged “suicide note” manipulated by the Conspiracy agents seeking control of Wakaba’s research legacy.
Before her mother’s demise, Futaba asked Wakaba to go on a family trip, leading to a quarrel where Wakaba expressed annoyance at Futaba’s requests related to her research. This interaction fueled the belief that Wakaba hated her daughter, especially with the timing of the “suicide” post-quarrel and the content of the falsified note. Following Wakaba’s death, custody of Futaba passed to indifferent relatives like her uncle Youji Isshiki, who neglected her basic needs and mistreated her. Struggling with guilt, trauma, social anxiety, PTSD, and hallucinations of Wakaba’s disapproving face overlaying others’, Futaba withdrew from society and hacking into information related to her mother’s research only to find it erased.
Adopted by Sojiro Sakura, a close friend of Wakaba, Futaba spiraled into depression and suicidal thoughts while isolating herself in Sojiro’s house in Yongen-Jaya. Refusing contact with others and convinced that her death could revive Wakaba, she avoided school since middle school graduation despite being high school age. Sojiro attempted medical intervention without success as Futaba locked herself away completely.
