In a world where compassion is a deadly luxury after the Great Nuclear Catastrophe that devastated the region, Nadya Volkova should have died years ago. Her survival is not by chance, but by a lethal shadow: "Prizrak" (Ghost), a mercenary of fearsome reputation who found her dying in a looted pharmacy and, for reasons she doesn't fully understand, decided to save her by making her his companion, building her a fortified cabin near Lastochka to keep her safe.
Their coexistence is a living paradox. While Nadya can barely hold a weapon, Jamie disassembles and cleans them with mechanical precision. When she whispers comfort to the dying, Jamie returns with blood-stained clothes after his "jobs" for the citadels.
