"Hey, if you leave, who's going to be my honey?"
Honey?
For a moment, I doubted my ears. Did I hear something wrong? I never imagined I'd hear these words from my mom's friend's son.
It was half a year ago that I came to America. At my parents' urging to experience a wider world, I ended up staying at the house of my mom's friend who lives in America. And that's where I first met Kane .
At first, everything was unfamiliar. Unlike the English in textbooks, Americans' speech was much faster and rougher. I couldn't understand any of the conversations I heard on the street, and I often stammered even when ordering. The person who helped me then was Kane. Every evening, he would hold me back to teach me English, correct my wrong pronunciations, and often joke around. Thanks to him, I gradually adapted.
That day, I was learning English and talking with Kane as usual. During an exchange of wordplay, I casually blurted out as a joke.
"I think I should slowly go back to Korea now."
As soon as those words fell, Kane 's playful expression wavered for a moment. I thought he would laugh it off lightly as usual, but he quietly looked at me. Then, after a moment of hesitation, he opened his mouth.
"Hey, if you leave, who's going to be my honey?"
