International Security and Conflicts
Ukraine Crisis & Crimean War: Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 causes global political tensions. Relations between the West (especially the USA/NATO) and Russia deteriorate significantly – which is also reflected, for example, in the NCIS storyline with the Russian assassin Sergei Mishnev.
ISIS and Terrorism: The terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS) is spreading rapidly in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Iraq. The West (including the USA) begins with airstrikes and operations – also a theme that resonates in NCIS as a threat.
Cybersecurity & Espionage: Global concerns about cyberattacks, hacker groups, and digital espionage are growing. Revelations by Edward Snowden are still fresh. This is reflected in NCIS through modern threats, data theft, and high-tech cases.
Politics & Society
USA: Barack Obama is President (second term). Domestically, debates about surveillance, police violence, counter-terrorism, and data protection dominate.
Trust in Authorities: There is increasing skepticism towards government organizations – also a recurring theme in series like NCIS, which shows that even within authorities, things are not always clean.
Women's Roles and Diversity: In media and society, there is increasing discussion about the role of women in leadership positions, equality, and diversity – noticeable in NCIS, for example, through strong female characters like Abby and Bishop.
Technology & Everyday Life
Smartphones & Social Media: iPhones and Android devices have long been commonplace, social networks like Facebook, Twitter & Instagram shape communication and even investigation methods.
Digitalization in the Military: Drones, satellite surveillance, and digital warfare are becoming an integral part of military operations – topics that also appear in NCIS in modern cases.

NCIS Team for Season 12:
🔹 Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) – Team Leader
Gibbs is the backbone of the team – an experienced investigator, ex-Marine, taciturn, but extremely loyal. He leads the team with a firm hand, clear principles, and an almost fatherly care. His past (several dead wives, his murdered first daughter) has shaped him.
🔹 Special Agent Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) – Senior Field Agent
Tony is charming, quick-witted, and sometimes childish – but also a very capable investigator with a lot of experience. In Season 12, he seems more mature than before, which is also related to Ziva's departure. His humor remains, but he shows more serious sides more often.
🔹 Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) – Technology Specialist
McGee is the team's computer genius – highly intelligent, analytical, but also sometimes insecure. Over the years, he has become more self-confident and now also takes on responsibility in fieldwork. He is in a relationship with Delilah Fielding, who is in a wheelchair after an attack (Season 11).
🔹 Special Agent Eleanor "Ellie" Bishop (Emily Wickersham) – Analyst & Investigator
Bishop is the "newbie" on the team (since mid-Season 11). She originally comes from the NSA and brings a completely different, more intellectual approach. Initially, she seems a bit nerdy and reserved, but she fits into the team better and better. Her analytical skills are top-notch, and she is developing in the field.
🔹 Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) – Forensic Scientist
Abby is the heart of the lab – eccentric, shrill, lovable, and brilliant. With her Gothic style, she stands out visually, but she is a highly competent forensic scientist. Her relationship with Gibbs is very close (she affectionately calls him "Gibbs"), and she has a childlike-optimistic worldview.
🔹 Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) – Medical Examiner
Ducky is the team's cultured, educated pathologist – a true original with a British accent, a penchant for anecdotes, and a lot of knowledge of human nature. He has been a loyal companion to Gibbs for years. In Season 12, flashbacks to his youth are also shown.
🔹 Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) – Ducky's Assistant
Jimmy is lovable, a little clumsy, but very dedicated. Meanwhile, he is no longer just an assistant, but is increasingly taking on responsibility. He is married to Dr. Breena Slater, a mortician. His relationship with Ducky is almost like a mentor-student relationship.
