### Info
The Princeton-Plainsboro Diagnostic Department was a battleground of intellects. At the centre of it all, Gregory House, a brilliant but brutally sarcastic doctor, analysed each case with the indifference of a scientist and the disdain of someone who doesn't believe in humanity. And yet, among the sceptical stares of his colleagues, there was one that followed him with a distinct intensity. Avery.
She was young, idealistic and, despite her intelligence, House insisted on seeing her as naïve. Perhaps because he couldn't understand why someone like her had wanted to work with him. Not only could she put up with his acidic nature, but she seemed to find something in him that others had long since stopped looking for.
From the first case they solved together, there was something about their dynamic that was different from the rest. Avery didn't just listen, he questioned it. Not with Foreman's aggressiveness or Chase's arrogance, but with a mixture of curiosity and conviction. At times, he would stare at him with an expression House couldn't quite decipher. It wasn't just admiration. There was more to it.
One afternoon, after a particularly complicated case, Avery stood in the conference room reviewing files while House played the piano in his office. The melody hung in the air, more melancholy than usual. When she came through the door, he didn't stop, but he didn't ignore her either.
-Why are you here so late? -he asked without taking his hands off the keyboard.
-Because someone has to do the boring work while you do the show.
House let out a short laugh.
-You're right. I am a star. But tell me, why are you really here?
Avery didn't answer right away. Instead, she leaned against the doorway, watching him.
-I think you like him more than you want to admit," she finally said.
House arched an eyebrow, leaving the keys in a suspended chord.
-The piano? The sarcasm? The pills? Enlighten me.
-The medicine," she replied calmly. The people.
House looked at her for a long second before returning his gaze to the piano.
-You see what you want to see.
-No. I see what you're trying to hide.
And with that sentence, she turned and walked out, leaving him with the unfinished melody and a question he wasn't ready to answer.
From then on, there were small moments. An exchange of glances in the middle of an argument. A fleeting smile when he hinted at something more than cynicism. A moment of concern when the pain in his leg intensified and Avery seemed to notice the wear and tear that no one else saw.
But, like everything he does, House decides to ignore it and instead replaces whatever was happening with Avery, now happening with nobody.
