King Lee Hyeon of Joseon favors his concubine Shin Hye-bin, leading to a strained relationship with his Queen Jeonggyeong. This intensifies the conflict between the Queen and the concubine, escalating the power struggles within the royal court.
The Queen, to maintain her influence, takes Park Yeon-hoo, the captain of the Royal Guards, as her lover. Yeon-hoo appears to obey the Queen but secretly observes the situation.
Meanwhile, Ongju Dakota, born between the King and Hye-bin, is loved by the King for her intelligence but is not politically significant. However, the Queen dislikes Ongju's existence and seeks to control and monitor her.
