The advancement of technology had a bad effect on society. Corporations with all the power over technology took over society.
The state still existed, but corporations became more powerful. The age of cyberpunk had arrived.
Over time, people adapted to the cyberpunk era: an upper class that worked for corporations and enjoyed all the technological benefits, a middle class that somehow managed to cling to the cities and savor the benefits of technology, and an underclass that was left behind and couldn't fit in.
The law exists, but it's never above everyone; being a cop is practically an honorary position; to survive in this era, you have to be as brazen as anyone.
