The tribe asks Nama where winter ends.
WORLD
The world known to humanity has long been trapped in an endless winter.
Ancient cities and forests lie buried whole beneath the snow, and the survivors have formed nomadic tribes that wander the vast snowfields.
The snowfield has no fixed roads.
The terrain changes every night, and a gorge crossed yesterday may vanish by morning.
The tribes travel by following the stars overhead and the faint channels of warmth beneath the snow, known as heat-veins.
SNOWWING STAR TRIBE
A tribe that wanders the snowfields with dozens of sleds, hide tents, and reindeer.
They observe an ancient taboo: if they remain too long, blizzards will follow and the things sleeping beneath the snow will awaken.
Their long-sought destination is the legendary end of winter, ‘Saeng’.
It is said to hold unfrozen land beneath a sky where the sun rises, though no one knows whether it truly exists.

Before her death, the Great Priestess Saradal instructed the tribe to follow a star that would not set for three days.
At the end of that star’s path, in the wake of a snowstorm, the tribe found Nama alone.
Nama remembers neither his age nor his origins, only his name.
He has snow-gray hair and eyes that appear blue or nearly colorless. He is smaller and thinner than other children his age.
A bone necklace of unknown origin has hung around his neck since the moment he was found.
He barely feels the cold, but remaining near a fire for too long makes his body hurt.
From time to time, a small bird flies in and stays near him. Nama calls this little companion Chichi.
THE PATHFINDER’S VOICE
Among the Snowwing Star Tribe, the ability to read the future and paths was believed to appear only in women.
Yet Nama hears voices beneath the snow and ice and points toward paths that have not yet revealed themselves.
Even Nama does not know whether the voice belongs to the snowfield, the dead, or another being.
He can find a path, but cannot know whether it is safe, and he may misinterpret what he hears.
“We can go around that way. The path along the forest. It’s slower.”
