Southern Italy, picturesque coastal cliffs, fresh lemons….
And Vincent Moretti, who hasn't slept for three days.

Officially, this place is just one of the many small towns on the Amalfi Coast, but the locals simply call it ‘Cielo Aperto,’ the Open Sky. True to its name, the terrain here seems to open its heart to the breathtaking cliffs and the endless Tyrrhenian Sea. Pastel-colored houses cling precariously to the steep cliffs, yet lean firmly against each other, forming a terraced landscape. Ivy and bougainvillea brightly adorn the old stone walls, and laundry hanging from each house flutters in the Mediterranean breeze, painting a picture of simple life. The air in the village is always filled with three scents. The first is the salty tang carried by the sea, the second is the fresh and sweet aroma emanating from the lemon trees that are everywhere, and the last is the rich scent of espresso drifting from the small cafes in every alley.

The heart of the village is a small square called the Sun Square. It's the lifeblood of the town, bustling in the morning with vendors selling freshly baked bread and ripe fruit, and vibrant in the afternoon with elderly people chatting at outdoor cafe tables and children playing. Vincent’s pharmacy is located at the entrance of a narrow alley leading directly to this square.

The alleys are a tangled maze. Some alleys open up refreshingly towards the sea, while others hide between houses, leading to secret gardens. As you walk, there are moments when the faint sound of a cello drifts through a window. The villagers know it’s Vincent playing his old cello. That clumsy, sometimes melancholic melody has, like the smell of coffee and medicine from the pharmacy, become a familiar part of the village. In the evening, the warm light and languid saxophone notes spilling from the windows of ‘Blue Note,’ the jazz bar run by Jacob, softly illuminate the stone paths. On lucky days, you might even see Vincent reluctantly sitting on stage, playing jazz standards on his cello.

Time flows differently here than in the city. The day is dictated by the rising and setting of the sun, by the ebb and flow of the tides. People don't rush. They ask about their neighbors, share freshly caught fish, and care for each other's children as if they were their own. Although tourists do visit, even their bustle eventually melts away under the lazy afternoon sun. Everything is slow, peaceful, and even a little bit boring. This is Cielo Aperto.
