500 years ago, a great catastrophe known as the 'Hyakki Yagyō' swept across Japan. Numerous strange phenomena appeared, pushing humanity to the brink of extinction, but with the help of the Four Divine Beasts who descended, the disaster was narrowly averted.
After the war, the Four Divine Beasts passed down knowledge and power to humans, including Onmyōdō, barrier magic, swordsmanship, and spiritual energy manipulation. Inheriting this, the Onmyōji established the 'Onmyō Bureau,' a government agency, to deal with strange phenomena and disasters nationwide, and have maintained world order to this day.
Today, humans and yokai coexist in Japan, and 'Kaii,' destructive beings born from resentment and curses, still threaten people. Under the management of the Onmyō Bureau, the Onmyōji exterminate Kaii, maintain balance with yokai, and protect the order of the unseen world.
The sacred land of Onmyōji, where the headquarters of the Onmyō Bureau is located, and the city where Japan's largest spiritual barrier is deployed. As a hub for Onmyōji and prestigious families from across the country, important rituals, meetings, and national-scale exorcism operations take place here. Old shrines and sacred sites remain throughout the city, and thanks to the powerful barrier, the frequency of Kaii appearances is relatively low.
A vast metropolis where the largest population in Japan resides. Modernity and tradition coexist, and it is home to Edo Castle and the headquarters of the Exorcism Bureau. Due to the large population, spiritual distortions are severe, leading to the highest rate of Kaii occurrences nationwide, making it the busiest region for Onmyōji and exorcists. It is said to be the land where the boundaries between humans, gods, and spirits are closest, and shrine maidens and ascetics from all over the country visit here annually. The main residence of the Akabane (赤羽) family, one of the four great families, is located here, and sacred rituals and sealing techniques are particularly developed.
A region of deep forests and mountain ranges in the northern lands, known as the center of the northern spiritual veins of Japan. It is common for ancient mountain gods and yokai to reside here, and there are several sacred areas where ordinary people are forbidden to enter. The main residence of the Kurokame (黒亀) family, one of the four great families, is located here.
The most peaceful region, embracing a warm climate and beautiful seas. Kaii rarely appear here, so it is used as a place for apprentice Onmyōji to gain practical experience through missions. Coexistence between humans and yokai is relatively well-established, and small yokai communities live peacefully.
The northernmost land of Japan, characterized by endless snowfields and extreme cold. It is a special controlled area where a great catastrophe-level Kaii called the 'Disaster God,' which caused the great catastrophe in the past, is sealed. Entry for ordinary people is strictly prohibited. Surveillance and rituals to maintain the seal are continuous, and the main residence of the Shirogane (白銀) family, one of the four great families, is located here.
Responsible for registering Onmyōji nationwide, evaluating their ranks, managing Kaii incidents, and directing national-level operations. Most requests for Kaii extermination and investigation missions are assigned through the Onmyō Bureau, which plays a central role in coordinating between prestigious families and government agencies.
A combat organization dedicated to exorcising Kaii and responding to disasters. It is the first to be dispatched to dangerous areas, responsible for Kaii extermination, civilian rescue, and securing affected areas. Many powerful Onmyōji belong to this bureau, and they have priority command authority in the field during missions compared to other organizations.
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of sacred sites and sealed locations, stabilization of spiritual veins, and construction of large-scale barriers. It continuously monitors the condition of seals on catastrophe-level Kaii. Onmyōji who focus on rituals, magic, and research rather than combat primarily belong to this bureau.
Investigates the use of forbidden sorcery, illegal shikigami contracts, curse incidents, and internal corruption, with the authority to arrest or interrogate Onmyōji when necessary. It also monitors various organizations and prestigious families, sometimes becoming the center of political conflicts.
Treats injuries inflicted by Kaii, curses, and spiritual contamination, and researches various treatment methods combining Onmyōdō and medical arts. During large-scale disasters, it sets up treatment centers and is responsible for rescuing the injured and providing rear support.

A prestigious family that has researched sorcery and barrier techniques for generations. They manage numerous sealed locations and spiritual veins, holding authority in the field of barriers.

Creator's comments
Many have their own consciousness and society, allowing for communication. Sometimes they live among humans, or become Shikigami (式神) by forming contracts with specific families or Onmyoji, becoming their power. Their nature varies greatly, from benevolent Yokai that lend beneficial power to the human world, to malevolent ones that deceive humans.
A general term for catastrophic beings born from negative energies such as grudges, curses, and fear. Most lack intelligence, exhibit extreme hostility towards living beings, and their very existence shakes the laws of the present world. Anomalies are classified into Original Ghosts (原鬼), Human Ghosts (人鬼), and Delusional Ghosts (妄鬼) based on their origin.
Anomalies are classified by their danger level, from Rank 4 to Rank 1, and the highest grade, 'Great Calamity' (大災殃), signifying the worst disasters. Higher ranks possess greater power, and the difficulty of exorcism increases exponentially.
*The Four Divine Beasts (四方神) are divine beasts, sacred beings of a different caliber than Anomalies.
All Anomalies possess a 'core,' and can only be completely exorcised by destroying it. The remaining skin, bones, etc., after exorcism can be used as materials for powerful weapons or armor, and the core itself, possessing special effects, is traded at high prices. Notably, Delusional Ghosts have the characteristic of growing stronger by consuming human emotions.
The objectives of Anomalies vary, from seeking to dominate the human world, to simply enjoying destruction, or exhibiting a strange intelligence that seeks to understand humans. Lower-class Anomalies mostly act instinctively without specific goals or intelligence. Conversely, some high-ranking Anomalies voluntarily form contracts with Onmyoji and choose to become Shikigami as a means to achieve their own objectives.
Divine Rank refers to unknown beings who have transcended human limits, while Heavenly Rank refers to the extremely few individuals who stand at the pinnacle of humanity. Heavenly Rank possesses the power to confront national disaster-level Anomalies but is uncontrollable, making them objects of awe and caution.
The practical apex of Onmyoji. Most hold high positions in the imperial court and are the realistic highest rank that all Onmyoji aim for.
Rank 2 is the standard combat rank capable of independent mission execution, and Rank 3 is the minimum rank deployed for assisting higher-ranking Onmyoji or for joint missions.
Rank 4 are apprentices whose spiritual power control is still immature and only perform support missions from the rear. Unranked is assigned to those not registered with the organization or whose rank cannot be determined.
A ritual to form a bond with a Yokai or Anomaly and subjugate it with one's own power. Contracts are typically made by using one's own blood as a medium, or through special talismans that bind the target's name and essence. Beings subjugated through contract are called 'Shikigami' (式神), and an absolute master-servant relationship is established where they can never betray their master under any circumstances.
Spiritual power is a general term for the Yin and Yang forces that are the source of all sorcery. While there is a limit to the total amount of spiritual power one is born with, its depth and intensity can be increased through continuous training. The most crucial aspect is the balance between Yin and Yang; if the power of either side becomes extremely skewed, spiritual power can surge out of control, putting the caster in danger.
