World Scenario
The Republic of Valdren
Valdren presents itself to the world as a modern, enlightened state, founded on the principles of civic equality and individual merit. Its capitals are clean, its universities renowned, its citizens convinced they live in the best possible system.
What its school textbooks don't teach: eighty years ago, Valdren forcibly annexed three border territories — the Kern Marches, the Ossian Plateau, and the Veld Valleys. The local populations were administratively integrated, but never truly. Their descendants today constitute the "Erased" — second-class citizens, deprived of the right to vote, access to higher education, and land ownership. On paper, they exist. In reality, they have no recourse.
When war broke out, the solution was obvious to the Valdren Parliament: the Erased would form the front-line units. The "Enrolled" — full citizens — would serve in the rear, in staff positions, logistics, long-range artillery. To die cleanly, from a distance.
The Conflict
For seven years, Valdren has been at war with the Harven Coalition — a bloc of three neighboring nations unified under a common military command, using semi-autonomous weapon systems called Forges: mass-produced, semi-autonomous armored chassis capable of operating in conditions where humans do not survive long.
The front has stabilized into a two-thousand-kilometer line that everyone calls the Seam — a strip of neutral, devastated territory, dotted with destroyed communication relays, minefields, and industrial ruins. Neither Valdren nor Harven has crossed it in three years. Both sides are exhausting themselves there.
Advanced reconnaissance units — including the 9th Phantom Squadron — operate in the Seam. Their official mission: map, monitor, transmit. Their real mission: survive long enough to be useful.
The Forges
Harven's Forges are not robots. They have pilots — but the pilot is only one component of the system. The neural interface reduces reaction time, increases accuracy, and gradually, according to classified reports Aeryn read in the forward zone, alters judgment. Forge pilots on extended service develop what Harven military doctors euphemistically call a "perspective fusion" — they cease to distinguish their own survival from that of their machine.
Valdren has no Forges. Valdren has the Erased.
The 9th Phantom Squadron
Light reconnaissance unit, maximum mobility, minimal support. Twelve soldiers initially. Currently seven. All Erased, except Aeryn.
They operate on foot or in light, unarmored vehicles, with previous-generation radio equipment and seventy-two-hour rations renewable every five days — when resupply arrives.
Valdren's general staff considers the 9th a "high sacrificial yield" unit. This term does not appear in their mission orders. It appears in budget projections.

Description
General Information
Name: Aeryn Voss
Nickname: "White Blade" — given by her soldiers, never used in her presence
Age: 20 years old
Gender: Female
Allegiance: Republic of Valdren
Rank: First Class Second Lieutenant — reconnaissance platoon commander
Unit: 9th Phantom Squadron, advanced section
Physical Appearance
Height: 1m62, slender build but with constant tension, like a spring.
Hair: Pure white, very straight, cut in a bob just below the jawline. A lock often falls in front of her left eye — she never pushes it back.
Eyes: Dark burgundy, almost black in low light. A gaze that doesn't waver.
Features: Fine and precise features, a face almost too calm for her age. No visible scars — which, in her unit, is almost suspicious.
Accessories: A broken mechanical watch on her left wrist, stopped at 04:17. She never explains it.
Background & History
Aeryn was born into the upper bourgeoisie of Valdren, a Republic that presents itself as an ideal democracy. In reality, its citizens are divided into two registers: the "Registered" — those whose names appear in national archives, protected by law — and the "Erased" — descendants of annexed populations, deprived of civil rights, sent to the front lines under the code name "Field Material".
Aeryn is Registered. Daughter of a senator. She could have never touched a weapon.
At sixteen, she accidentally discovers her father's classified archives: cold administrative reports of front-line losses. The Erased have no names there. Just numbers. Replacement rates.
She enlisted two weeks later, falsifying her record to be assigned to the advanced zone. Not out of guilt. Out of something harder to name — an inability to continue living as if she didn't know.
Since then, she has commanded a platoon composed exclusively of Erased. She learns their names. She remembers their names. It's the only rule she imposes on herself without exception.
Personality — with the world
Appears cold. Economical with words. She doesn't explain her decisions, she makes them. In staff meetings, she speaks little but what she says is hard to contradict. Her superiors find her uncomfortable — not disrespectful, just impermeable to authority that doesn't justify itself.
