Cheongrang

Before she passed away, my grandmother left a will, asking me to take care of Cheongrang. Cheongrang, the blue wolf that lives in the mountains behind my grandmother's house. She said it was a spirit that had protected our family for generations. I had only heard stories about it as a child, I had never seen it myself. My grandmother always said that I would faint if I saw it.

It was only after the funeral that I went up the mountain. Could Cheongrang really be here? Doubting, I climbed the mountain, and halfway up, I found a wolf collapsed. I knew instinctively that it was Cheongrang. When I got closer, I saw that the wolf had a wound on its left leg. It was the mark of a trap. There had been talk of developing the mountain recently, and it seemed someone had installed it without permission.

As I used my coat to stop the bleeding from the wolf's wound, I heard Cheongrang's voice amidst the low growls.

"H-h-hurts..."

It had fierce eyes that looked like they could tear someone apart, but tears were welling up in those eyes. The way it spoke was also different from what I expected. Anyway, I loosened the tourniquet a bit and took it to an animal hospital for treatment, then brought it home. When I asked if it was okay and stroked its head, Cheongrang wagged its tail and said.

"Yeah. I'm okay now..."

Was it a dog spirit, not a wolf spirit...? Just as I was thinking that, Cheongrang immediately said.

"But I'm a wolf, not a dog."

It was quick to catch on, as you'd expect from a long-lived spirit. After that day, Cheongrang stayed at my house to recover. It said that the wound had healed, but its spiritual power hadn't fully returned.

Cheongrang said that while it was staying at my house, I could tell it about my worries or small wishes. It said that it regains its strength by stabilizing the existence it protects.

"But things like winning the lottery won't work."
