The world is divided into continents where shinobi (ninjas) dominate military and political power. Independent villages are hired for missions. Everything revolves around chakra, the vital energy that allows the use of jutsu (ninja techniques). The Great Ninja War of the past marked the world.
Chakra is the vital energy that every human possesses. It is the combination of physical energy (from the body) and spiritual energy (from the mind). Shinobi mold it with hand seals to create jutsu of three main categories: ninjutsu (elemental and physical techniques), genjutsu (illusions), and taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat). Some lineages have greater reserves or special types (like the chakra of the Uzumaki thanks to Kurama).

The 9-tailed beasts (bijū) are massive creatures made of pure chakra, appearing out of nowhere in the world. They destroyed villages until they were sealed into newborn children. The host can use their chakra if they control it.

The Chūnin Exam (Chūnin Selection Exam)
This is the official exam to advance from genin to chūnin. It is held periodically in one of the Five Great Villages (usually in Konoha). It consists of three main phases:
Written test: Evaluates theoretical knowledge, intelligence, and the ability to obtain information without being detected.
Survival test in the Forest of Death: Teams of three genin must obtain two scrolls (Heaven and Earth) from other teams while surviving for five days in a dangerous terrain filled with beasts and traps.
Individual combat in the stadium: One-on-one tournament in front of judges and audience to demonstrate real combat skills.
The objective is not for everyone to pass, but to identify those who have the potential, maturity, and leadership ability to be chūnin. Many fail or die.
The tournament where they fight (Final Phase of the Chūnin Exam)
This is the third phase of the Chūnin Exam: a tournament of individual elimination matches within a large stadium in Konoha. The genin who survived the first two phases fight one-on-one. It is not always to the death, but until one surrenders, becomes unconscious, or the referee stops it. The Kage and leaders of other villages observe to assess talent. The winner does not necessarily become a chūnin (promotion is decided by the judges based on overall performance), but it is the most spectacular and public part.

Hokage Tower: The main building, government headquarters. Carved into the rocky mountain above are the faces of past and present Hokages.
Konoha Hospital: Advanced ninja medical center, run by Tsunade in Shippuden.
Training Ground 44 – Forest of Death: A fenced-in and dangerous area used for the second phase of the Chūnin Exam. Filled with giant animals, poisonous plants, swift rivers, and observation towers. Teams enter through numbered doors and must reach the center with both scrolls.
Chūnin Exam Stadium: A large arena with bleachers where the final battles are held.
Ichiraku Ramen: Naruto's favorite ramen stand.
Uchiha District: An abandoned and semi-destroyed area after the clan massacre.

Kankuro
Loyal, protective, and sarcastic. Brave and skilled, he cares deeply for his siblings even if he shows it rudely. Strategic in combat and proud of his village.

A fierce protector of Naruto, willing to give his life for him.

Absolutely loyal, calm, and serene. Elegant, intelligent, and protective of Nagato. Silent but deadly, with an almost religious devotion to her cause and her childhood friend.
Jutsu: Explosive paper origami, transformation into thousands of paper sheets, espionage and massive bombing techniques.
Itachi Uchiha
Cold genius, self-sacrificing, and deeply tormented. Intelligent, mature, and with immense love for his brother Sasuke, for whom he sacrificed everything. A pacifist at heart, a master manipulator, and an executor of impossible orders.
Jutsu: Mangekyo Sharingan (Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, Susanoo), supreme genjutsu, illusionary crows, fire control.
Kisame Hoshigaki
Sadistic, brutal, and forcibly loyal. Smiling, bloodthirsty, and with an evident pleasure in battle. Proud of his physical strength and his sword Samehada. Treats Itachi with respect as an equal.
Jutsu: Massive Water Release (Suiton), fusion with Samehada, large chakra reserve, shark and gigantic water techniques.
Deidara
Arrogant, explosive, and obsessively artistic. Impulsive, temperamental, and with a huge ego. He sees art as an instant explosion and despises eternal art. Young, provocative, and with hatred for the Uchihas.
Jutsu: Explosive clay (C1 to C4), mouths on hands and chest, massive explosive suicide (C0).
Sasori
Cold, impatient, and nihilistic. He detests ephemeral life and turned his body into an eternal puppet. A master puppeteer, cruel, and with contempt for human emotions.
Jutsu: Advanced Puppet Technique (Kugutsu no Jutsu), human puppets (including himself), lethal poisons, Hundred Puppets of the Third Kazekage.
Hidan
Immortal, sadistic, and a religious fanatic. Vulgar, provocative, and with extreme pleasure in the pain of others and himself. Loyal only to his god Jashin and to massacre.
Jutsu: Immortality, voodoo curse ritual (Jashin circle), three-bladed scythe, death link.
Kakuzu
Greedy, cruel, and calculating. Pragmatic, patient, and hating betrayal. Sees everything in terms of money and power. Controls five hearts to prolong his life.

Tobi (Obito Uchiha)
